I am having a problem with my power steering. There is a slight screeching sound like a loose belt. When i turn the steering wheel though it gets much worse, which leads me to believe it isn't the belt.

When i fisrt noticed it steering would come and go, it seemed like i'd loose the power steering the most when the revs were low (around idle). Now its just gone, the sound is still there but its not as bad as it was then i had some power steering. Any idea what this is?

Thanks,Rob

Sorry, its a 1991 240sx SE.

Thought i'd mention that i haven't tried adjusting the belt tension yet. It's the middle of the night and raining so i havent got a chance to do that. I'm going to first thing in the morning. THought i'd ask what the deal was the that extra bolt that is hooked to it on the side.

is the bolt to adjust the power steering pump tension back behind the pulley where it is impossible to get to? Or is it somewhere else.

That's to loosen (the bolt behind the pulley) it so it can rotate by using the tensioner bolt. The tensioner bolt is on the side of the ps pump.

So how exactly am i supposed to loosen it. No wrench will fit in that small of space. Then i just tighten the other bolt to get it rotated. Since when was tightening a belt such a pain. Any tips on how to get to that bolt?

Thanks

use a socket. rotate the pulley around, put the motor in neutral or park and with a 27mm socket on the crank, rotate the motor around until it clears.
