I have been having all kinds of trouble with my S13 SOHC. First the car would not idle very well, once you gave it gas it would run fine though. I tried advancing the distributor and that would smooth it out but the dist. only goes so far and at the most advanced point it would still run rough. I thought maybe the dist. was the problem so I took it apart, nothing, so reassemble and re-install. Let it sit a while, came back and dead battery. So jump it with a battery pack and it runs VERY rough. rev it up but it just keeps dying on me, its missing and backfiring as I do this. Finally I get it running and take it down the block. Well it will only go 15mpf in 1st gear at WOT. What the hell? The person I bought it from said he just did a bottom to top rebuild and even milled the head. I am thinking blown head gasket, since the car makes an awful racket and is so uneven with no power...HELP!!!

chain is likely off time. You need to pull the valve cover and make sure all the marks match on TDC

ok if I do that, how do I reset the timing. I should say that the car did drive and had lost of power prior to this and now runs like ***. Also, lots of oil on the headers and the block etc.

I did pull the valve cover off but was at a loss how to alter the position of the cam timing with the chain tensioned.

the oil you seen all over your engine, was there oil in the spark plug wells where the wires go? if so thats probably alot of your problem.

When you pull the cover off you are mearly checking the timing marks to verify weather or not they are in time, there are threads on checking the cam timing on DOHC cam engines such as yours all over the site, try doin a quick search there are plenty of pics as well.

This is a SOHC. I think I am just going to swap in a DOHC. There is no sense trying to fix my current piece of junk.

still the chain is a factor here if it jumped time.
