I've got an aftermarket electronic oil pressure gauge and one night the nut holding the wire fell loose, reading no oil pressure.. not saying this is the case but just a thought.

Worst case, oil pump failed (no pressure) and valve train, along with hte rest of the engine, is oil starved causeing clatter.

I would verify you really have oil pressure before you run the engine for any length of time.

The 240's do have a problem with sludge and other debris clogging up the pick up screen. Take the oil pan off and clean it out same thing with the pick up tube and screen
