So I took my timing chain guides today. Used the writeup from here: zer...age=1 by ILikeMy240sx. Let me tell you, it is a great writeup! Thank you! Just followed the instructions and everything went like clockwork.

Only odd thing was this...I set my car to the top dead center mark on the pulley, but my cams were pointed in and my rotor pointed to the right. The exact opposite of what was in the writeup.

Odd but not harmful. I just put everything back the way it was, the car fired right up, adjusted the timing a little, and the next day I drove from the Antelope Valley to San Jose and back with no problems.

Yay for NICO! Now if my mounts and shifter would just show up...

Everything is pointing the wrong way because if you look at your distributor, you'll see you're 180 degrees away from firing the #1 cylinder. You're at TDC, but of the exhaust stroke. Not a problem, as you said, it just makes everything backwards.

dborelli: I figured it was something like that. I took a good look at it before I removed the distributor and noticed that it was liked up with plug 4 and just made sure to put it back that way. Are there two different sets of marks on the pulley? I didn't look that closely and my knowledge of engines can be rather limited...

ArticDragon and lrb: No worries! I did take off the lower upper guide. I just didn't have it off when I took that picture. They were both a little worn, but not so bad that they were about to break like some people I have heard of.

When you did this, how did the sprocket cover go back on? Was it fairly easy? when i tried a timing service on my sohc engine, i couldnt get the cover back on without taking the head completely off because it wouldnt fit inbetween the oil pan and head without messing up the rtv.

Also, was the distrib, valve cover, and sprocket cover the only thing you had to remove to get to everything? Since the sohc cover is all one piece straight down to the oil pan, there were alot more parts that needed to be removed which is i think one of the main reasons i havnt done the guide removal yet.

Thankyou for your help!

If anybody else can answer these questions for me please feel free. Especially the first one. I can probably get under the hood and look to see what all needs to be removed myself.

Glad it helped.

I made a little note on the guide so that even if the cams are facing inwards, people wont panic... All you have to do is just rotate it another revolution so that the lobes are facing outwards. BUT, making a marking on the rotor of the dist is pretty much a fool proof method which is why I wrote it there. You install it back just the way you had it regardless of where the cams are pointing.

I posted this in 240sx Tech, but then I found this post, so:

How should I go about taking these plastic clip things off of the front timing chain cover? See Pic>

Blue arrow.

They're plastic things that bundle some wires, and I really don't want to break them. Thanks.

they snap in place.....if you are carefull and pull them slowly (pull on the base of the bracket not the wire harness...) you should be able to save them and reused them.... like of other plastic hardware on a nissan sometimes they break, the solution: use tie wraps or other hardware instead.

I also did this along time ago. My car doesn't clink around now like a spray can rattle. Yay Nico!

hey is it alright if you only remove the upper guide, instead of the upper side guide? will this have any effect on the engine and the chain??

Yes, you could try JUST removing the top one, I did, but had no luck ending the Rattle until I removed the lower guide.
