The problem (or not) is that waiting is so attractive relative to what a degree can get you initially. Working in restaurants, I took home then almost what I take home now. It is customary (though illegal) to claim only a portion of what you really make, so you're only getting taxed on a portion of your actual tips. That, plus your social life rocks and you're only working 30 hours a week or so. There are downsides of course. Alcoholism and drug use are common, neither of which are conducive to studying. And since most people tip on a percentage basis, you only get a raise when menu prices go up or if you quit to work in a higher-grossing restaurant. Ultimately, your pay is tied to inflation. That's not true with the job your degree will (should) get you, where you can actually get promoted. Waiters are the only people I know who stand to take a severe pay cut when they get promoted to management!
