I have dropped the pan on my transmission and to my surprise there was no gasket or magnet. Maybe I am missing something.

Is the magnet obvious? I have tested and re-tested putting a screw to find the magnet on the pan, but there is nothing.

If the magnet is there, then it is the weakest magnet ever.

How important is having the magnet?

One very positive note... The ATF fluid was red and free of sludge and dirt. Everything on the inside looks so clean. I can't even begin to explain how happy that makes me.

anyways, I am covered in atf fluid. it got in my eyes, mouth, all over my clothes, everywhere. You have to love it!!!

The magnet should be like a very large washer sitting in the circular "low point" depression of the pan. Should be obvious! The magnet is like another filter..picks up the fine stuff that passes through the real filter. Surely it does some good. How in the world did you not have any leaks without a gasket?

Yeah, there is no magnet. I will pick one up. A magnet is just a magnet, right? If it is like a washer, then one like a little block should work the same.

I have no idea how I didn't have any leaks. The bolts were on there pretty good, but nothing crazy like. The records I have on the car are sketchy at best, but someone had to have drained it before.

Do you think wal-mart has magnets? Home Depot? Where do you buy these things? I mean how often is it that you go to the store to buy a magnet? This will be a first for me.

Shape probably doesn't matter too much. Keep an eye on clearances. The strongest magnet I've ever played with was a rare-earth cobalt magnet that came out of a space gizmo motor. It's about 1/2 the size of a AA battery, but it's amazing how strong it is.

Yeah I saw the pick of your valve covers ole wesso. Not pretty. Looked like mine. Believe me, having the transmission fluid look like it did brought me great joy.

Sure all my boots are cracked, my shocks shot, valve covers are crap, plenum was nasty, power steering hoses are in disarray, egr was clogged, etc. etc... But hey, that there transmission was/is a thing of beauty. Now if I only had a stupid magnet............

If you don't have any ATF leak, then it has a gasket some where between the pan or the transmission. Sometime the gasket stays on the pan and you think it is part of the pan.

I buy a lot of those rear earth magnets really cheap from a scientific surplus company. The best use I have found is using the disk ones in various sizes to put inside my sockets. I haven't dropped or lost a bolt/nut in over a year now! I have one that is .75" dia., that thing will roll by itself over 2 feet if you put it on a floor near any steel.

Obviously I'm easily amused.

Hah, hmm, uhh your right VA99q45. There is a gasket. Well then, did I mention that the ATF fluid was looking good? Ohh I did.

Anywhoo, I got a magnet. My dad had one for when he drops stuff into fire pumps that he works on. One of the perks of having an engineer as a dad, he has almost anything you could ever think of when it comes to tools. He even has a gasket making tool set and the material to make one with. I made one for the TB, but I am a little scared to use it so I had scottsdale send me one.

Radio Shack should have magnets...

I thought I had no gasket on mine, but it was "welded" to the pan.

ATF looked good? How was the exact color comparison to brand new.........Red has many shades...........how many tiny metal filings imbedded inside filter [cut it open because they get stuck in the part you cant see].

If it looks good when dip stick is wiped on a white paper towel it probably looks good inside the pan..........notice the black stuff that comes off the dip stick.

Lots of aluminum and friction material/glue that won't stick to magnet.

Amazing members don't want to believe the wear the AT filter stops.........unlike oil ATF doesn't hold much metal in suspension and the particles smaller than the filter just keep making the round trip till they stick somewhere.
