I just finish replacing the shocks and struts in my '93 J30. Also replaced a dead fuel injector. Take the car out for a test ride and the oil light comes on. First just at idle, and goes off when revved, but then it stays on. Drove another mile or so to get back home, and valve lifters are making a racket.

What am I looking at? Bad pump? Where is it, and what drives it?Anything else that could cause this sudden loss of pressure?

Jon.

Have you checked the oil level?

If you drove more than a mile (or ran it for more than 10 mins) with the oil light on your engine is probably screwed. Forget about fixing it and plan on a new motor.

Did a bunch of fuel get into the oil causing it to be super thin?

Oil level is fine. Oil/filter changed less than 1000 miles ago.Don't know why fuel would have gotten into oil. The bad injector was open-circuited, and therefore not firing.

I see no oil sloshing in the cam housing when looking into the oil filler hole.

Yes, the engine sounds pretty bad -- it was at least a mile to get it home.

Is it true that engine has to come out to replace oil pump?

Car is only worth a few $K. My only reason to fix this would be to get it running long enough to trade it in for a G35x.

if it comes down to having to replace the oil pump you do not have to take the engine out to do it, but it is a big job and is alot of work, taking out the front chain cover to gain accese to it, you might have a low torque on your crank pulley bolt and causeing the sproket to slip around too, ive looked at the pump and had it apart and it seems that with the type that is is that you will not just all of a sudden not have oil pressure like the way it was acting, however you might also have a clog in your pickup or somewhere in the oil system, how old are your chain guides? the plastic can sometiems sheer off and clog the pickup and get into the pump and get screwy with that, you have a lot of things to check out, let us know what you find out, and good luck

carfrk666- I don't think so on a J30. Its got belts and tensioners, not chains and ramps.

It looks like the pump is accessible by "only" removing the oil pan, which is not a trivial task, but sure beats pulling the motor.

BTW, if its of any relevance, after replacing the injector, the car was very hard to start. Took a lot of cranking, but eventually fired up and all the idiot lights went out. The idle was surging between about 800 and 2000 rpm. After several minutes it settled down, but was pretty rough. But it smoothed out off-idle. It ran strong for a couple of miles (no low oil light) even though the idle remained rough, almost to a stall. Then the light started to come on, and....

I will first check the oil filter to see if anything unusual is in there. Then I think the next step is to drop the pan.
