I have been working my 720 for a few days now, and have ordered a weber conversion and bought new fuel filter. I was messing around today making sure the pump and everything is good...It has bad gas in the tank and I was going to use the fuel pump to pump the tank out, but I am not getting any fuel. Took loose the suction side of the pump and stuck the hose in a gas can and it pumped fuel. Any suggestions on what could be the issue here? The gauge shows almost half a tank and you can hear gas in the tank when you tap on the tank. Thanks for your help

Lance

Doesn't the gas tank have a drain on it, or am I wrong?

But check fuses. It probably has a dirty sock on it on top of that. it might not be bad to drop the tank and get it cleaned up and reinstall it with a clean pump. I realized how bad it is to leave a tank of bad gas sitting for a long time, with my other 240sx project.

yes it does have a drain plug and that is how i will probably have to drain it. The pump is good...double checked all that today...just can't get it to pull fuel from the tank

So its not priming at all currently?

If the part works then wiring is next thing to check, make sure its not frayed somewhere.

it is pumping...when i double checked the pump i took the suction side of the pump loose...put a scrap piece of fuel line on it and stuck it in a gas can.....took the discharge side tube off and it pumped fuel just like knew....but for some reason when i hook it up back up to the tank...it will pump...just won't pull fuel from the tank

Sounds like the problem is further back. either the rest of the hose from where you broke the connection to where it nipples at the tank, or it is the pickup tube inside the tank itself. I'd drain the tank, drop it, and repair/replace the pickup and gaskets. Since you can get suction to a gas can at ground level--your pump is just fine. Let us know what you find.

I am thinking that is going to be my plan....there is a shop here in town that can boil the tank for cheap...i would rather do that and have it nice and clean rather than put that new weber on it and somehow a piece of trash manage to make it that far and mess that up too....Once my carb gets here i have an auxilary jug i can use to tune on the truck while i wait on the tank to get back.

How hard is the tank to drop?

Not bad. Everything on these trucks is super easy to get too, except intake spark plugs.

Had trouble dropping mine with fuel in it. The drain plug was worn, so I had to go the hard way. You can blow back into the tank with air to free up the suction pipe.

All the tanks have the same bolt arrangement, so any would work.

When you replace the clutch master cylinder, please consider posting photos and a "How To Do It Yourself" thread. Thanks
