Hey all,

I'm the proud new owner of an '06 M35, just under 90k, no mods. I love the car and look forward to updating my ride in the future. But...

It is cold outside in the central U.S., and I've discovered a problem. The fan will not blow for the heater or defrost. The buttons all work, I can change the fan speed in the display up or down, but there is no fan actually blowing the air through the ducts. Sometimes, the fan will kick on after I've been driving the car for a while, but that seems to be random.

Is there a simple fix for this or at least a way to diagnose the problem?

Thanks.

Great buy and welcome.

What you described is quite normal. It's a fully automatic climate control system. It's not going to start blowing until the engine has produced enough heat in the hot coolant side (heater core) to blow actual hot air. The randomness indicates that sometimes your engine is warming up quicker than other times. There is something you could try to get that heat sooner.

- The fia front grill cover.
- keep you car plugged in if you have the engine block heater option
- let the car idle longer with a few small revs before driving off.
- park inside a garage
- last and least preferable is floor it as soon as you begin driving (very stressful on all your drivetrain components).

To test that it is functioning okay if you press the front defrost button it should begin blowing immediately even if it's cold.

It does not blow in heat or defrost mode. There is air coming out of the vents on defrost as, if I leave the AC compressor on, it will defog about 2/3 of the windshield, but the fan is definitely not on.

I should also say that it was 9 degrees outside before driving home from work. I started the car fully 30 minutes before I got in it to leave. I did not rev it up or hot rod it on the 30 minute drive home but I did average about 45-50 mph for the whole trip.

I currently have this issue in my 06 M45. Not sure if this is normal for the car to do, but same situation as you.

I normally let the car warm up 10 mins before I leave for work in the morning but the heater usually does nothing and the seat warmers don't do a thing either. It's only after I drive for about 5 mins that the car actually starts to show signs of heat out of the vents, then it quickly turns into volcanic heat out of the vents soon after.

The windshield defrost does somewhat do it's job which I use to sort of melt overnight ice that forms.

I believe there was another thread about this issue that also talked about the seat warmer not working right away. Not sure if there was a solution but you are not the only one.

Yeah, I did see a couple of threads about seat warmers not working. Mine do work right away, and I know the heat is on. If I hold my hands over the vents I can feel the slightest movement of warm air.

So is this something that I should just take to the dealership then?

Sounds like your blower motor is shot...it sits in a housing just below your in cabin air filter.

Part is about $160.00 for new, OEM

But, I have seen used ones on Fleabay for about half the price.

Let us know how it turns out...good luck.

That's a nice flow chart. I've had this problem it seems for only this season. Last winter the car seemed to work fine but then again, it was garaged last year. This year the car sits outside all the time and that may be a reason for it taking forever to blow hot air out until I actually start driving.

I know the blower motor works since I turned on the A/C and heater when I changed out my cabin air filter about 3 months ago. I physically saw the motor going full speed.

Not that big of a deal, At least it works but I'm used to other cars throwing out good heat within a minute or two from a cold start.
