Hey everyone, I have a major problem on my hands. Last night on my way home I picked up 1 quart of oil and put it in my car when I got home. My car has had an oil leak and I planned on getting it fixed this Tuesday.
This morning, I noticed white smoke coming out of the tail pipe, I might of put too much oil, but honestly, it is hard to read the dipstick. Anyways about after 5 min of driving, I took off from a red light and noticed a huge lack of power and a cloud of white smoke behind me, I pulled into the nearest parking lot and shut off the car. I noticed white smoke coming out from under the hood at this time as well.
I have left the car there for fear of doing anymore damage. What could I be looking at?
Thanks in advance.
-Serge

If the white smoke smells like coolant, the head gasket is blown.

How does the engine sound? When was the timing belt changed?

I bought the car in January not sure when the timing belt was changed(or if ever). The engine sounds really rought@ 1200rpms.
I just detailed the engine too...yesterday morning. This morning it was verified by my neighbor that I did put too much oil in her. Not to be a noob, but should I drain some of the oil out and see how she runs or is that wishful thinking?

Worth a shot
The J takes 4.5 Quarts with a filter change involved.

The VG30DE is an interference engine. When the belt breaks, so does the engine. Its big $$$ for a rebuild or replacement.

Ok fellas.. I drained out some of the oil and now she is running smooth again but I still see some white smoke leaving the tail pipe, not much, but it is noticeable.
I also see a little smoke coming out somewhere between the headers and the plenum on the left and right sides of the engine.

I only let it run for about 3 min.. I figure I'll let her warm up tomorrow morning and see if it was oil that had been pushed out or if i need new gaskets.

ok after draining the oil I get very little smoke coming from the right side of the engine. No more out of tail pipe. When I get back from work, i'm going to change the oil and make sure that it gets only 4.5q's!!

Does anybody know of a good vg30de resource? I need some good pics of the left and right side of the engine. Someone needs to make a detailed wiki for it!

Update! today i drained the oil...all of it, ended up being 9 quarts all together. You guys must be thinking how could i let this happen? well this car has had a slow leak and i thought i was putting into it what was seeping onto the driveway.. but I guess it wasn't that much. So I put 4.5 quarts in it and wouldn't you know no more smoke out of the tail pipe, the check engine light turned off but after letting her run for 20 mins and driving around the block. I still smell burned oil and I see slight smoke coming from the right side of the engine.

Could this be a gasket?

Could this in anyway be a injector O-ring leaking issue?

Just for the heck of it rule that out with a fuel pressure test.

fuel pressure test.... i will look into how to do that. Would O-ring issues cause a car to appear to be using more fuel than normal?? thanks Paul. My new valve cover gaskets came in today as well, so tomorrow I will replace those along with the pcv valves(been wanting to do that for months). Hopefully the part store has a fuel pressure test gauge.

A leaking O-ring(s) would definitely cause more fuel to be burned. You would also be at risk of hydrolocking an engine with excessive fuel past the injector.

Ok guys. Today i changed the spark plugs and it turns out a few were fowled! So after an oil change and a change of spark plugs, my car seems to be running smooth and at hp gains again!
Today I will take the J to work and see how she does on the gas. If she still burns more then usual I will get in there and replace the injector O rings. Why not? Ill keep you guys updated and thanks for all the tips!
