When I push the clutch pedal in it just goes straight to the floor. However, if I pump the clutch pedal it builds pressure, and I can drive it around as long as I pump the pedal at every stop. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be?

I'm taking my car into a mechanic tomorrow to have a full bumper to bumper inspection, but I want to know if this is a simple fix that I can do myself beforehand (like simply adjusting the pedal).

Thanks,Kyle

If it just started doing that and you haven't had any lines or the slave off, it's more than likely the master cylinder is worn out.If you don't do the work yourself, and your mechanic hasn't worked on the Z before, point out to him that he needs to bleed the point on the passenger fender well next to the PS reservoir first, and then bleed down at the slave cylinder. Before changing the MC, you could try and bleed it first to make sure before you spend a bunch of money.

Is there a write-up on how to bleed and replace it?

I might be able to get one of my mechanically inclined friends to help me.

sounds like a bad master cylinder. There is a write up somewhere on how to bleed the clutch system. the only thing that I had trouble with (forgot to read the instructions properly :| ) was the bleed valve that is up near the power steering. If you miss that one you'll be bleeding for quite some time lol.

It's also important to realize that bleeding the clutch system on the z32 (turbo atleast) is differant than bleeding the system on many other cars. I learned this the hard way, search it though, it will pay in the end.

Bleeding the clutch system is easy.

Tools required:

- a second person- 3' length of hose that fits on the fender nipple so you don't get fluid on the paid and in the engine bay.- container to catch fluid- 1 bottle of DOT 3 brake fluid- box end wrenches for the 2 bleed nipples

Procedure:

1. Take cap off clutch reservoir and have friend sit in car. *Check make sure the reservoir is full2. Put box end wrench on fender nipple, as well as hose on end and end of hose in container3. Crack the bleed nipple just loose. Ask friend to push slowly on pedal and not let it up until told to do so.4. Turn wrench to open nipple until fluid/air bubbles coming out.5. When it stops, turn wrench to close nipple all the way. Now tell friend to let pedal up. Repeat this until a clear stream of fluid comes out which sometimes takes 6 times or so. You have to check the reservoir level every 2 pedal strokes and add fluid. If it runs out or he lets the pedal up at any time in between, do it all over again as you've just introduced air into the system.

6. Do 1-5 at the slave cylinder other than no hose is needed, just a catch bucket.

If it doesn't help, and it may not in your case, it's the MC

I don't think there is a writeup on changing the MC, at least I haven't seen one.

bled using the valve on the slave cyl. but nothing worked until i bled through the valve on top near the PS reserve. it released alot of air and had the clutch pressured up in less than 10 pumps make sure you bleed from both locations.

when you do this procedure, do you leave master cylinder cap off?

Yes, and watch the level carefully, you don't want to run low on fluid and ingest air.

Is it just me or does his SN sound like a p0rn site?

Is it possible for a slave cylinder to have any type of internal leak? I have a similar problem that is getting worse and worse. I have to pump my clutch pedal every morning so I can move, then after work the same thing. Sometimes when driving it becomes hard to shift and I have to pump it more. If I am on the highway for more than 5-10 minutes with no shifting, I will have to throw it in neutral and pump about 7 times so I can get into another gear.

Gah this takes all the fun out of driving the car. And on top of that, <1.5 years ago, just a week before I bought the car, the master and slave were both replaced at the dealership by the previous owner. I wonder if they will warantee the part if I change it myself....

what i did was i bled it out of the spot in the engine bay but instead of doing it slowly, i got very frustrated and pumped it really hard and i got all the bubbles out after about 4-5 pumps and it got back to normal.

Hi guys, I have an issue with my clutch pressure seems to only act up when it warms up I have replaced the master n slave cylinders I have bled countless times, the guy I bought it from said the master was new it came with the car, I have no leaks however the stock line was bipassed with a straight line from the master to slave, before I buy a new master cylinder because I don't know how long the one that came with the car sat for in the elements. Any other suggestions???
