Hey guys,

I just went for an inspection and my Q failed even after all the work that I've done. The cruise control doesn't work (the light comes on in the dash, but it won't set), the brake lights stopped working (I just replaced all the bulbs), and the transmission shift lock won't release unless I hold down the shift release in the center console (this I mentioned before).

What are the chances that these are all related to one common problem? Anyone know where to start?

Check your fuses...... However it seems to me like maybe the brake switch under the dash is toast.... its a simple part to get and to replace...

Do the front and rear hazards still work?

I agree with elwesso... the brake lamp switch can fail and cause the brake lights not to work - as well as the shift lock issues. Happened on Q1 at about 105K if I remember correctly. The only warning I had was an occasional "pop" in the radio when I would apply the brakes - probably the switch arcing.

The Cruise has a separate brake switch - but I don't know if the control looks for both or not...

the cruise runs off both... Is uses mainly the ASCD brake switch but the other switch has to work in order to complete the circuit.

So basically, I should buy the Stoplamp switch first and see if that corrects the cruise control problem, right?

The local dealer is still closed for the holidays, so I called the next closet one to get an idea on the price of the STOPLAMP SWITCH #25320-75A00 and it's $17.70 up here as opposed to $3.92 from Joe. That's just ridiculous, but I need the part right away so I'll have to pay the premium. I can't drive the car with no brake lights.

Bought the Brake Switch today, but unfortuantely, it's not the Brake Switch that's the problem. The fuses are all ok, there is ground, but no power. Maybe I have to start chasing the wires for a broken connection. I have no idea where the relays are or where to start.

Don't forget to check the under-hood fuses as well...

I found the problem. I had a burnt socket behind the fuse panel. The brake lights are working and so is the transmission shift lever. The cruise control had a button missing by the switch and so we repaired that and teh cruise is operational once again.
