Ok, so I'm not so dumb as to think it's ok not to have one at all, but the way things worked out, I won't have the flange to mount my BOV till next week, which means I'll have to run my setup w/o one for about 3 days. Think it'll kill my turbo in that much time? What if I take it easy. I'm already going to have to take it easy cuz I need to break in the clutch, but I didn't know if any of you had any other idea's. I should be getting my clutch today, so the swap should definatly happen this weekend. Cross your fingers guys, I'm shooting for a weekend swap! (Yea, I know, it can't be done, bla, bla, bla.)

You shouldn't have any problems, I ran mine for a year before I installed a bov, The purpose of the bov is to prevent the turbo from spining in the opposite direction which if does it will generate more lagging time, and a possibility of eventually shorting out the life of the turbo, but as I said I ran mine for about a year at 12psi, and didn't have a problem.

dint run it too hard, and you are breaking in the clutch anyway, just take it easy and keep below 5000rp trying not to make full boost,

The turbo never spins in the opposite direction... if it did it would also press exhaust back into the exhaust manifold.

it gets something called compressor surge. Thats the line on the left of the efficiency maps. That's when there isn't enough centrifugal<sp> force to push any more air into the intake pipe. The turbo basically chops at the air. You will hear what i'm talking about.

It won't hurt anything. The Buick GN and T-Type don't have BOV's from the factory and they get mean compressor surge when you lift off the throttle. My friend has an 87 and the original stock turbo is still VERY strong after 120k miles.

Ball bearing turbos deal with surge even better because the nature of BB;s means that you don't need a thrust bearing. That is the part that fails when compressor surge destroys a turbo.

Long story short...

You'll be A.OK

^^Its also not good for the turbo, there is no sense in wearing out your turbo....its not like their expensive or hard to install, it is foolish IMO not to use on.... I have seen many a turbo wear out early or beak because of compressor surge....

they are hard to install if you have to take your intercooler pipe off and have a flange welded on. They also are expensive. You could by a hell of a lot of really nice meals for the price of one. I'm not saying not to get one i'm just saying that the only bad side effects are increased lag induced by compressor surge.

A lot of early turbo cars didnt run them. Neither did the CA18DET when it came out.

But it IS a good idea to have a BOV. I stopped using my SR stock one because it was leaking. 2 weeks later the stock turbo finally gave out.

lol I was running 12 psi with no BOV. Once day when I took off from a light, it just left one big white cloud of white smoke under boost.

Well it looks like it's not going to matter now anyway. I won't be putting my motor in this weekend now. I'm not going to explain in this thread, but check out "SPEC sucks!" in this forum.

you can pick up a used 1g talon/eclipse/laser bov for about $40-45 bucks and they are possibly one of the best bov's for the money. I used to have a '94 gsx and most 1g DSM people just left their stock bov or if they wanted to run over 15 psi then they "crushed" the blow-off valve. This allowed one to run to about 19-20 psi. Which isn't half bad considering the BOV can be picked up for about $45 and "crushing" it is easy and free. People with the 2g DSMs usually just junked their stock plastic BOV and used the one from the 1g cars. Oh and i realize i've been calling it a BOV the whole time even though its really a bypass valve. But whatever, still serves the same basic purpose.

Well it's all good now. I got my HKS SSQV and the flange should be in this week. Now to find someone who can weld Aluminum...

You can get stock RX7 BOV's for free, thats why their not expensive...also, a Relief valve is a POV(pop off valve) not a BOV...in the aftermarket world

Hopefully I won't have a problem with boost creep. I'm not turning up the boost yet, so it shouldn't be a prolem. I don't have gauges yet, so I don't have any way to tell where the boost is at.
