Hello there,

Twice today I was driving my '03 Coupe after letting it sit outside for about 4 hours. For the first couple of miles the car wouldn't shift into 5th gear. After waiting at a stop light both times, 5th gear came back.

I couldn't even shift into 5th using the sport shift.

It was around 10 degrees Fahrenheit, and I was wondering if the G35 has a feature that doesn't allow you to shift into overdrive until it warms up.

The dealer had the transmission flushed about 3,000 miles ago as part of the 45,000 mile service when I bought the car.

Anyone run into a similar situation?

The Stats: '03 Coupe, Auto Transmission, 45,000 miles.

Thats normal. Most every automatic transmission out there won't let a shift into overdrive occur untill the transmission fluid has warmed up (usually around 150'F).

I'm fairly certain that it has something to do with the torque converter going into full lock up in an overdrive gear.

Study your FSM you will see normal operation doesn't begin until coolant warms >150F and ATF the same.

Lubricity of oils and ATF requires them to be warm to function as designed.

Great. Thanks for the replies. I guess I need to not be so impatient when it is cold out.
