Didnt read the article, but this was a part of a large scale auto safety bill. Fines for talking/texting while driving were also increased dramatically. The issue with pets is obviously to prevent distractions, Im not against it. You should see what some idiots do around here.

In other NJ news, Sports betting was recently approved for Atlantic City, which is of course awesome.

Up next, all cars in NJ must be safety orange to improve visibility; All papers in the car need to be in a folder or briefcase to prevent a piece from flying around and getting stuck on the drivers face; All cars will come with windows that do not roll down, to prevent road rage; Tires must be inflated properly, to prevent terrorism. All children must be encased in carbonite to prevent fights and thus, distracted parents.

^Well think about the last time you passed a car with a mother/father raging at their children fighting in the backseat all the while swerving all over the road. Ive seen it a handfull of times. Its those same people who cant control their children that cant control their pets. Ive seen people driving around my home town with TWO dogs on their lap, in and out of the window, obstructing views, etc, etc. We have them to thank for this. It might inconvenience me if I have to transport one of my obedient pets, but at least I know the moron who does it without responsibility endangering me will now be reprimanded.

It really is a different breed of idiot out here, its actually nice to see the lawmakers finally realizing it.

Have you driven through NJ lately?
NJ has a dense population/high car insurance rates.. if this is what they have to do to make the roads safer. Then so be it.
Of course, there's the whole driver education program that's awful.. but y'know..

My take on this as a New Jersey-an...
  • Initially I think it's retarded. It's probably just another way of making some money.

Read the article. Yeah I didn't think people would be carrying animals on their laps as they drive. Animals might spaz and now you have a SERIOUS distraction. So yeah it's probably a good thing.

Go on and read the fines... W T F? $250-$1000? I'm glad humans get a $50 ticket for seat belts but animals are apparently 10xs more valuable. I finally come full circle, and have come to the conclusion that it's just another way to make money.

Not wearing your seatbelt does not endanger others, only your idiot self.
A spazzed out animal has the ability to distract and cause accidents, endangering others. The fines are about on par with the new cell phone violations, all meant to protect others...and make money.

So being an idiot and only endangering yourself will run you $50
Being an idiot and endangering yourself and others around will run you $250+

Exactly, but NJ does not have the monopoly of "WTF!!!" laws. For example, in nearby Pennsylvania, you can be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt in a 5,000 lb SUV equipped with airbags, yet they do not require motorcyclists to wear helmets.

^Yup, could never understand the rationale behind the PA helmet law.

Only thing I can think of is if you don't wear a seat belt in that 5000lb SUV and get in a wreck, you live, possibly spend the governments money on healthcare and rehab, cause havoc, and generally end up costing others money and time for your care taking. You wreck your bike without a helmet, well, natural selection at work ya know.
