ok so i passed by a shop where me and my friends go to for exhaust, intakes, and pretty much anything we want the guy can make lol so i was asking him about my car and performance things to do and he strongly suggested nitrous. he said for $500 you can get something like 75 to 100 HP or WHP (forgot which one lol probably just HP though). on a 3.5se with exhaust and maybe an intake, that would put us at about 380 hp and so far CVT is said to only be able to take 400 hp (we'll see what CVT can really take by the time blake is done with his set-up ). so that sounds pretty appealing. i told the guy i got a 13.9 before and he says it would make me 1.5 secs quicker (that would be a 12.4 in the 1/4 mile). i haven't really researched it deeply yet but it sounds like not such a bad idea. any thoughts from you guys? i know one guy had nitrous in his GTO...... how was it? cons? pretty sure we know the pros lol

Why you gatta rain on his parade?

If the man wants to to NOS, let him go NOS! It's a pretty common thing to do, and you would have the first NOS A/C, at least on these forums!

anything and anyone can wreck an engine. If you use nos only when youre supposed to and responsibly, you won't ruin anything. If you use it every chance you get, of course youll ruin your car. If you save it for the track and races, its a great mod!

well, how is it compared to turbo or a supercharger? right now it's just an idea of something that could make it faster. how bad would it mess up the motor, what parts and how would it mess those parts up?

Turbo's and supers change the way that air is induced into the engine - NOS or nitrous oxide or any of the latter are another chemical compound in your engine designed to burn along side the fuel, making your engine rev harder and faster. It's like your body's adrenaline. Its good for a quick boost, but if you use it more often, it can destroy the internals of your engine.

Nos is much worse than turbo/sc setups (unless its pushed up to 20psi or something lol)...

The simple way i think of it is like adding a shot of tequila into your corona... yeah it tastes good for a bit... and yeah you can drink it... but after a bunch... you just dont feel right and its not good for business.

Hussain, lets meet when im in cali.. i leave tomorrow!

You should be safe with a 50 shot, anything more than that is pushing it. Every extra 100 horsepower will roughly take a second off your 1/4 mile time. As mentioned above, excessive use can cause internal engine damage, specifically in the combustion chamber. You can install a little switch on your throttle body that will activate the nitrous only at wide open throttle, that way you only use it when you floor the gas. Nitrous oxide isn't necessarily worse than a turbo charger or supercharger, but you need to understand how it works compared to forced induction to use it safely. Air is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other stuff; nitrous oxide is 33% oxygen. When the comparatively oxygen rich gas is introduced into the engine, fuel is burned much more efficiently, causing an increase in cylinder pressure. That extra force driving your piston down is what gives you extra horses. Both forced induction and nitrous oxide work on the same principle of getting more oxygen into the combustion chamber, but it gets accomplished in different ways.

when speaking in terms of hp when not talking to a sales person at the dealership people and performance shops refer to whp because it's something that can easily be measured (why talk about it if you can't use it). so far as throwing a 100 shot of nos on your stock tuned a/c cvt? i wouldn't recommend it. did he specify what kinda nos setup he would run on it?

I think a dry, 50-Shot would be the most you'd want to do to an A/C.

Among the realities of the differences between NOS and Forced-Induction is the wind-up. Forced induction is always in one way or another a gradual increase in pressure. NOS on the other hand is generally near-instantaneous unless you do some really fancy work on the kit.

That being said, it's the instance density that often screws up a motor (along with the fact that most motors aren't designed for the additional stress). I've been wrestling with the possibility of doing a dry kit myself.

Additionally, I'm on board with the "Use it right" part of this discussion. Use it all the time and you'll screw your engine eventually. I'd suggest the following:

1) Remote on/off switch, thereby letting you open and close the bottle remotely.2) Purge system, clear the line before use (sort of pre-charge)3) Throttle sensor for only triggering at WOT.4) Of course, a kill switch/master switch to keep the system disengaged when your in "Normal" mode.

Another two cents,-- Wind

dry shots are more likely to cause problems though. I remember minorly looking over some of this a couple years ago in my hot rod days of the Z28 lol. Everyone on the camaro forums recommended wet shots. That way you are adding extra fuel with the extra oxygen that is much colder. This helps keep things in check a little better. But again, its been 2 years since I looked into any of this, so I could be off a bit haha. I do remmeber that a 50 shot dry wasnt enough to worry about hurting anything on the LT1 or LS1, but anything over that wet is definately the recommendation. (And honestly I wouldnt do anything but a wet kit, just for the extra re-assurance of fuel getting delivered with the NO2). Nitrous tears things up when it hits the engine and there isnt enough fuel there to give it a proper burn. My dad told me of a time he had installed a kit and when he hit the nitrous on an old car of his without enough fuel in the tank, so when he hammered the gas and everything sloshed to the back, it sputtered.. that one sputter was pure nitrous oxide running through the engine because the gas wasnt near the pickup. He said you could look down into the engine nearly because it burned up all the butterfly valves :P.

Aside from the dangers, this can be done without harming the engine if done correctly

Plenty of guys with 3rd gen Altima's running 50 and 75 shots, I even know a 6th gen max running a 100shot.

The 4th gen VQ is a bit beefier so 75 should be fine, just don't abuse it.

I am currently running a wet system with a 75 shot in my 02 3.5, its safe when used on the occasion, your not going to want to juice every time you go out, but runnin down a mustang is always fun.

Me too!! I say JUICE it you will love it. I have used nitrious on a number of my cars I have had with no problems. Just dont get greedy stay at a 75 shot. You will most definitly want to go with a wet kit if you dont you will run lean when juicing and that is what causes problems. Nitrous dosent kill motors stupid people kill motors

First off, NOS is a brand, not a chemical. Nitrous Oxide is N2O, marketed by many companies in automotive performance kits. Some of the more popular brands are ZEX, Venom, NX, Edelbrock, and NOS.

As for the nitrous, be careful after 75 shot. Direct port is really labor inesive/risky, and dry is unreliable and hazardous to pre-manifold components/risk backfires. A wet single point system is the way to go. However, it is risky as to the placement of the injector in the intake manifold. Too close to the throttle body, and you risk a backfire that will blow your intake piping to bits, and usually cause an engine fire. Newer wet nitrous kits have become increasingly easy to install by pulling fuel via the schrader valve on the fuel rail, which is normally designated as a fuel test port. It makes plumbing and using a wet nitrous kit much more simple.

Typically, for every "shot" rating of the nitrous, you can except that much whp in return. 50 shot would give the 3.5 CVT a/c roughly 280 whp, 75 shot would be 305 whp, and so on. It is to be used sparingly, and only at WOT. I whole heartedly agree with windhaven in his installation method. It is well thought out and includes many of the safe points many people forget. Its up to you whether you want to wire it switched to the pedal, but if you do, make sure its switch at ONLY WOT.

I would go on the bottle myself if not for the turbo. I wouldn't go more than 50 shot myself. Just a safe number to hang around. Good luck with the build guys

adidas2go, im not sure if Altima's could handle it (without extensive engine mods), but if you ran nitrous on top of your turbo......well that would be something else!
