Nitrous Oxide Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nitrous?
Nitrous Oxide is a non flammable gas used to aid in the oxidation of fuel. First developed in World War I by fighter pilots needing extra speed, it has been adapted to many modern uses.
Is it the same as the doctors use?
The commonly bought nitrous used for racing purposes contains sulfur to prevent the use of it as an inhalant. The sulfur causes permanent damage to the respiratory system when inhaled. (Don’t sniff it!) Medical grade nitrous can be purchased for use in cars, but its vendors must be professionally licensed.
What does it do?
Nitrous effectively multiplies the amount of oxygen in a given environment. Here, it adds oxygen to fuel to create a leaner running motor. Since a motor will attempt to burn all of the oxygen that it can take in, this creates a hazard when adding large amounts without adding extra fuel.
Will it hurt my motor?
The answer to this lies in how the system is installed, and how the driver uses or abuses the system.
What different kits are available?
Kits from all manufacturers are basically the same. Where they vary is in the type of kit.
A dry kit consists of a bottle, a line to a solenoid, the solenoid, a line from the solenoid to the nozzle, the nozzle, and one or more pills to control the amount of nitrous allowed to flow through the nozzle. Dry kits are installed before the MAS and MAF sensors to allow the computer to compensate the lean condition it is about to receive with extra fuel.
A wet kit consists of a bottle, a line to a solenoid, the solenoid, a line from the solenoid to the nozzle, the nozzle, and one or more pills to control the amount of nitrous allowed to flow through the nozzle as well as a line from a Schrader valve or fuel pump branch to a fuel solenoid, a line from the fuel solenoid to the nozzle, the nozzle, and a pill to control the amount of fuel allowed to flow through the nozzle. Wet kits are installed with the nozzle after the MAS or MAF sensor, but before the throttle body.
A direct-port kit is usually custom made, and may consist of any number of nozzles, solenoids, pills, and lines that the driver may desire. Direct-port is injected directly at either the fuel injector, or the plenum/runner just before the fuel injector.
What is a window switch?
A window switch is a relay box that opens and closes solenoids at a specific RPM. An example of this would be an automatic car that sprays between 3500 and 6000 RPM. A window switch would be ideal in this case to eliminate worries about things like spraying through a shift and damaging a stock transmission. You can also find window switches in use on some standard cars in combination with a clutch trigger which shuts off the nitrous when the clutch is depressed.
What is a WOT switch?
A WOT or Wide Open Throttle switch is installed behind the cable driven arm attached to the throttle body. This switch only allows the solenoid to be activated when the throttle body is 100% open or at wide open throttle.
What is the best setup?
The best setup is whatever you and your car are happy with. There are cars running all different kinds of setups from a 5hp dry to a 1500 hp direct port.
