Does anyone here use nitrogen in their tires? I am wondering if it is worth it for fuel economy and better tire ware. Also does a regular tire pressure gauge work with nitrogen? If the nitrogen does go below recommended tire pressure can I use my compressor to add some air or do I need to get more nitrogen filled?

Nitrogen may offer very minor improvements but if you have to pay for it, it's not worth it in my opinion. The atmosphere is 72% nitrogen already, so increasing to pure nitrogen will give you a little better stability with fluctuating temps but I've never seen any solid tests to document exactly how much benefit you get. If you do have nitrogen you can add regular air, no problem, and any pressure gauge will work.

I have nitrogen in my tires as my dealer changed it over as part of their PDI.

You can fill nitrogen-filled tires with normal air if you like. That being said, if you find yourself adjusting your tires continuously you will eventually shift the content of air in the tires to the point that you are receiving little value from initially putting in nitrogen. Therefore, if you are not going to be putting nitrogen back into the tires when they need it, it doesn't seem to make sense to put it in initially.

If you take your vehicle in for oil changes you can see if the shop uses nitrogen. I would think they'd top up your tires as part of their inspection they perform while doing the oil change. My dealer does this for me.

I was sold on the Nitrogen by my dealer. Had to refill my tires with air more since the nitrogen than before i had it. and I've noticed no improvements. Got the nitrogen about a year ago. Not sure if they were refilling the tire with nitrogen during checkups or not. But I wouldn't pay for it again.

If Nitrogen is expensive then I wouldn't buy it, unless I'm Autocrossing or doing some type of sport race.
It's a lot better just buying a tire pressure gauge and filling with Air.

Nitrogen filled tires maintain their pressure 4-6 times longer than air filled tires which is beneficial to TPMS equipped vehicles.

One of the reasons that nitrogen has become very popular in auto dealerships is that it can solve the issues of false TPMS alarms. TPMS alarms were mandated on all new vehicles starting in 2008, and are designed to alert the driver when the pressure in the tires varies 25% from the recommended set pressure.

Nitrogen is a huge advantage with TPMS systems for a couple of reasons. Nitrogen is very dry, minimizing moisture in the tire and ultimately benefiting the TPMS. Also, by retaining pressure longer, you will have fewer early AM alarms because of overnight temperature fluctuation. Dealers want the TPMS to function as intended, and nitrogen ensures that happens.

There was a really good article on nitrogen in tires in this month's 4 wheeler magazine. As mentioned above, the real benefit is the slower rate at which the tires loose pressure - because the nitrogen molecules are larger than the oxygen. Another benefit is that there's way less moisture in nitrogen than air - so pressure changes with temperature aren't as drastic. The higher cost probably isn't worth the benefits though, but there is a home nitrogen system available for about $1000 that connects to a normal compressor, and filters out the O2 and moisture: It's called parker's tire saver 3.0. www.parker.com/racor
