My setup thread: zer...46516

I know Nistune is kind of like a standalone tuning unit while Enthalpy is a pre-tune ECU rom service.

I am planning to tune it with Nistune myself, and wondering if I would be ok if I spend about 6 months on reading/researching ECU tuning. I am reading 2 tuning books:

How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems by Jeff Hartmanhttp://www.amazon.com/Modify-M...15825

Engine Management: Advanced Tuning by Greg Banishhttp://www.amazon.com/Engine-M...r=1-1

After reading http://www.plmsdevelopments.co...s.pdf. it kinds of make sense.

I just want to learn how to tune my car, and looking for a good typical tune.

Another question for Enthalpy is how good they are. I want to see more details on mapping and timing table. Since they just need to know the injector Size, air Flow Sensor, etc., it seems like they are just some generic tunes. Did they just modify the injection mulitplier (K constant)? Or do they tune more than that? I read many Enthalpy threads, and most people are happy about their tunes, but I want to know more about Enthalpy tunes.

Thanks!

I've never seen the fuel or ignition maps from my Enthalpy tune, but judging from datalogs of races/dynos of my car, he definitely changes more then just the K constant.

The timing changes a lot as you go through boost based on the turbo and other factors, like upgraded cams, etc. It's important you tell him as much as possible so he tunes for it, so I'm pretty sure they aren't really that generic.

I think if you're up for the challenge then go with Nistune.

I think putting the control in your own hands is always going to be superior.

Once you get on a dyno and maybe bring a VERY experienced friend with you to help tune.

I'm renting a dyno locally and have a friend who knows standalone tuning inside out. It's a learning curve but that's ok because when it's all said and done you have the kind of upgradability that others can't match with pre-programmed ECUs.
