Hi All, :wavey:
We just purchased a 2010 Nissan Versa Sedan. we dont actually have it yet. Its our first new car, always had used before, and are by no means car people so we dont know much about them. Anyway, when we bought it they offered us the extended warranty package that covers a lot more things for 5yrs. We initially said yes because we have financing for 5 years so it seemed like a good idea. But after looking thru it and actually figuring out what is covered by the standard warranty that comes with the car we are kinda wondering if we should still bother with it (we havent actually paid for it yet).

Just wondering if you guys think its really worth it, or if its not really necessary? Do you think we will end up using it, or are these cars pretty reliable and not really requiring much in repairs for the first 5yrs (unless of course you wind up with a lemon). I know its hard to say since its a 2010 and we are still in the year 2010, but any opinions and advice would be appreciated.
If we had an extra $1300 kicking around we would certainly get it, but saving that money would be really nice.
Thanks.

Yes it is worth it. I've had the extended warranty on a few previous cars, and it always works out to be worth it. The warranty covered a faulty 6 cd changer in my wife's Altima that went out about once a year. In my Sentra it covered some faulty brake calipers about 4 years in.

So yes, over the long haul - $1300 over 5 years isn't that much for the peace of mind that you will have very few repair costs over regular maintenance. It's not that the car is bad, it's an insurance policy against anything bizarre that might come up.

or you could put $300 away a year just in case something comes up [remember. there is going to be interest on that $1,300]. [The extended only takes you to 5 years? ]

I extended the warranty with Nissan to 7 years.

The Versa has been with me for over 2 years now; and not one problem except the fuel pressure regulator (which most others had problems with as well). Also, if you have a CVT transmission, NIssan extended that warranty for free. In Canada, it's 10 years or 200K.

I am not too sure I will even bother with my next car because when my sunroof started leaking last year (around Sept); they didn't even want to fix it under 'warranty'. The car was not even two years old and they didn't want to fix it. My dad just spoke with our salesman, and then he spoke to his manager; they didn't end up charging us to 'adjust' the roof.

IMO, I'm not a warranty guy.
But if you don't perseverate on cars as much as some of us do  then go for it!
Factory defects usually show up relatively quick.
The parts I used to manufacture [engine valve springs] would fail within 200 miles [and kill the motor], or were good for life!
With two of my previous cars I had purchased extra used car warranty [one was sentra]. I used both warranties, yet didn't save enough to justify warranty purchase!
Also, extra warranties are usually limited in scope.
IMO, I would stick with a trusted mechanic. But if you're not in that position, perhaps extra warranty is right for you! :)

well there wont be interest as we have 0% financing (whole reason we bought a new car). And we are going to pay the $1300 upfront because if we add it in, it will bring our monthly payments up to where we cant pay them.

yes it was only for 5yrs. we have our 3yr 'comprehensive' warranty (which I guess is bumper to bumper, but not really cause there are lots of things not included). and then a 5yr powertrain. so this extended warranty extends the 3yr one to 5yrs and then adds in a whole bunch of other things to be covered....to be honest we dont even know what most of those things are. There are few things we think are important like radiator, water pump, oil pump, alternator that already covered for the 3yrs, and this will extend them to 5. As for the things that arent covered at all, and would be covered under this...Tension rod, Torque arm, brake pedal, Turn signal are the only things that we actually know what they are. Having to pay the extra $1300 is kind of a piss off to us, as the car we really wanted was a VW but couldnt afford it, and its making us second guess our decision.
It also says: Normal Maintenance services are not covered, such as but not limited to: adjustment, alignment, batteries, belts, brake pads and shoes, brake rotors and drums, distributor caps, rotors, filters, headlight aiming, high tension wires, spark plugs, timing belt, wheel alignment and balancing, and wiper blades.
-seems to me those are alot of the types of things you need to have done, so its making us wonder whats the point.

The Fuel Pressure regulator is not covered unless we get the extended warranty. Do you know if this Is a problem that is limited to earlier models, or are the 2010's having this problem too? Do you know how much it cost to get it fixed?

I can't believe they are telling you this now. I am pretty sure there are a few other members on here, some from Ontario, who do not have the extended warranty and had the FPR replaced under the regular warranty.

I have an 08 and had the FPR replaced. I am not sure if the 10's have the same issue. I would think it would be a fixed issue by now, but you never know.

do you know if you are able to extend the regular 3 and 5 yr warrantys that the car comes with, once that warranty is up? paying the money to extend to 7 or 8 yrs would make more sense for us.

I honestly cannot remember. They mentioned something about extending it at some point, but I cannot remember in what time frame you have to do so.

I just figured I wanted to be covered for the length of my car payments, and the 7 year warranty gave me a few extra things (rust inhibitor, sound shield, paint protection, and fabric protection) plus 5 free oil changes; and roadside assistance for the length of the extended warranty.
