Nissan VG30 Trans swap Question

So heres the question; My friends have 2 Nissan Hardbodies; a 1988 4x4 with a VG30 engine and RE4R01A trans, and the other is a 1994 2wd with a 2.4l z24 engine and a FS5R30A 5 speed manual transmission. The transmission in the 88 will not shift into 3rd gear and we have changed the filter, fluid in the pan, etc and it hasn't helped. We were wondering if it would be possible to bolt the FS5R30A to the VG30. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.
