Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.

Thanks to the help of this forum and its admin, for which I am very grateful, we've been providing this information for a number of Nissans and Infinitis.

So far only the 2004 Titan is in the survey. But many years of the Titan, Frontier, and Xterra are about 2/3 of the way. And the 2005 Xterra is just a few short of the minimum.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.

Both mine are so far from stock at this point that it wouldn't be an accurate depiction.

To a certain extent, vehicles with mods can participate. But from the photo it appears you've gone beyond that point...

The survey does contain a few quick questions about mods. Not specifics, but "do you have more than x." What I'll probably do in the future is break each vehicle into engine, suspension, and other, and exclude modded vehicles from engine and/or suspension analyses, but not from the rest.

Additional participants very much needed.

The 2004 has been added to the survey, but we're going to need more particiipants for a result. Let's get this done!

Had a 2008 Titan owner email me yesterday, wondering why we have no reliability stat for his truck yet. Simple answer: not enough Titan owners signed up to participate.

Can we fix this?

The 2004 Titan is now in the survey, and getting close with the 2005 Xterra. Many years of the Titan and Frontier are about 2/3 of the way.

So far 104 Frontier owners, 76 Titan owners, and 103 Xterra owners signed up. A start, but many more remain needed to provide results for these trucks.

Just four owners short of the minimum for the 2005 Xterra!

To provide an additional benefit, I recently enhanced the related repair history survey so that it can (optionally) be used as a personal car maintenance record for cars 2000 MY and newer.

As always, more participants would be helpful. Updated Car Reliability Survey results in mid-May.

There are now 152 Frontier owners, 91 Titan owners, and 178 Xterra owners signed up. Better, but more remain needed for every model and year.

Quite a few model years of the Frontier, Titan, and Xterra are now just above or just below the minimum. So even a few more participants for each would be very helpful.

Starting this month we have a new question to measure, as objectively as possible, the severity of a problem. Many people have been asking for reliability stats that weight problems by how severe they are, and once we have enough responses with the revised survey we'll start providing this.

Also this month: updated reliability stats, with the 2004 Titan BARELY making it in.

Good one.

With the 2004 Titan we're just two responses short of being able to provide a stat next month.

Also close with some years of the Xterra and Frontier.

We didn't receive enough responses from Titan or Frontier owners to include these trucks in our updated results, which include owner experiences through December 31, 2010. Many year are just a response or two short, so with a few more participants for these we'd have results with the next update, in May.

We do have a reliability stat for the 2005 Xterra. With a reported repair frequency of 174 repair trips per 100 vehicles per year, it's worse than average.

Thank you, once again, to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May and August. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We have an initial result for the Nissan Frontier based on owner experiences through March 31, 2011.

With a reported repair frequency of 19 repair trips per 100 cars per year, the 2007 Frontier is better than average. This is based on a very small sample size, though.

We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We have updated results to include owner experiences through June 30, 2011.

The 2004 Titan remains a single response short of the minimum--any owners here who can tip it in?

For the Frontier, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 53, about average

2005: 136, worse than average

Very small sample sizes in both cases, which might explain the large difference between them. Or there were a few bugs with the 2005 that Nissan worked out prior to the 2007.

For the Xterra:

2006: 124

2005: 183

Both are wore than average. Xterras and Pathfinders of this vintage (Frontiers as well?) seem prone to cooling system failures that can lead to automatic transmission failures.

We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We have updated reliability stats based on owner experiences through September 30, 2011.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year.

For the Frontier:

2007: 79, about average

2005: 106, about average

For the Titan (badly need more participants):

2004: 27, better than average

For the Xterra:

2007: 34, better than average

2006: 90, about average

2005: 167, worse than average

2000: 125, about average

Small sample sizes in all cases.

We'll have further updates later this month and in May. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We have updated our reliability stats to include owner experiences through December 31, 2011.

For the Frontier, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 54, about average

2005: 74, about average

Very small sample sizes in both cases.

For the Titan:

2014: 81, very small sample size

Very small sample size.

For the Xterra:

2010: no repairs reported, 13 SUVs

2008: 65, about average

2007: 39, better than average

2006: 71, about average

2005: 68, about average

2002: 71, better than average

2000: 93, about average

Again, very small sample sizes, which could explain some of the variation from year to year.

We'll have further updates in February and May. We'd love to provide more precise stats and cover more model years--just a matter of getting more owners involved!
