I am going to be looking for a Nissan truck with a 6cyl/auto/4X4/ extra-cab.. I would really like an engine that has timing chain v belt- are there any styles/models/years that I should look for?

2005+ will have a chain. All previous V6 trucks with the VG series engines used belts. The 4 bangers have always used a chain.

he's right on the money... and I donno about the 2005+ models with the V6's because well they are still new enough to not live through huge millage stories but I have seen the older hard body 4 cyc hit over 200,000 before needing a chain, if u get a V6 Nissan before 2005 with the VG engines look to change the belt about every 60,000 miles

Thanks folks!! Looks like we'll be looking for 2005 + Frontier or 2001+ Pathfinder. I've had two (too) expensive valve jobs due to timing belts... one Accord at less than 40K and the SE6 at about 75K (my fault but tired of "no-warning" shut downs and painful bills This is a great forum- especially with my Nissan "stable"... Thanks again! Doug

The VQ 05 and up engines are now very well tested. They shipped in various forms on Nissans & Infiniti cars long before the finally made it down into the trucks. The V8 Q45s used chains since the early 90's and in fact Nissan screwed that up from 89-92 with plastic guides that failed. The G series from day one and the Z's since the 350 used the chains.

I have an 05' with 28k and not seconds engine problem. I know of a few X-Terra's already at 150k and no issues...they are pretty much Nissan V6 bullet-proof.
