Hello, new here, have only had an 88 Nissan truck for about two weeks now. I've been browsing around the net, and it seems that you guys know these trucks literally inside and out! So, something new happened today.

Going down the road, I began to hear the ding-dong of a little bell. I've never heard it before, so this is new to me. And wow! How annoying! I get home, and shut it off, and the bell is still going until I take the keys out of the ignition.

So now I'm messing around with it trying to figure out WTF??? Opening the door is the only thing that makes the bell stop, so now I have to drive down the road with the door ajar and the cab light on to get some peace and quiet.

1. Has this happened to anyone else? I can't find any reference to ignition bell problems anywhere on the net including here.

2. If you have was there an easy fix?

and 3. If I'm the first in the galaxy to experience this problem, could one of you fine folks please at least tell me where the ding-dong beast lives so that I may slay it somehow?

Many thanks in advance, and hope to post some pix as my new ride receives some well deserved "love" it requires. :chuckle:

I'm still searching... we had a 720 Service Manual around here somewhere. Let me check with our 720 experts.

If they are the same as the hardbody, you can pull a fuse and completely disable the dinger. Not a fix but might help you keep your sanity.

Sounds like the door switch is broke on drivers side in door seal down low is a rubber covered button 2 phillips screws hols it in. When the door is opened the switch pops out and makes the bell ring, to tell you door is not closed if switch went bad then it will ding all the time or never. Pull the plug loose and se if it stops, if not then you need to short the 2 pins in the plug with a jumper wire, it either ahs to be open or closed circuit to work. Go to junk yard and take old switch with you get on from any hardbody including pathfinder easy fix.

Thanks for the replies, the major malfunction is that the cab light still works normally. Door open, light on, door closed light off. Only the dinger is reverse logic, door open bell off door closed bell on. It sounds as if it's coming from behind the speedo cluster, but if I can find it I shall definitely get rid of it as I'm not too thrilled about having those bells dinging while I'm listening to the radio in the driveway.

This is what the door chime looks like in 2-door WD21 Pathfinders - I'm fairly sure the two vehicles are similar enough that the door chime looks the same. Courtesy Parts lists the door chime (25038N at the bottom) as being somewhere in the driver's side footwell, probably behind a kick panel or something. As for what's make it constantly beep, check the two door switches and ensure their contacts are clean. If that doesn't help, either unplug it or try to find another door chime from a junkyard.

I'm thinking that you might have a bad relay for that bell. The switch obviously is working because the light does what it should do. I'm thinking that if you could find the relay for that and change it, you might cure it. Your other option is to just cut pull the connector plug on the side of the bell box and call it a day. Good luck with it, and until then, CRANK UP THE RADIO!!!

My egnition switch is bad and the bell would stay on even after the key is removed so I disconnected the bell!! Remove this connector and it should stop it from ringing!! Now it only rings if the door opens with the headlights on and engine off!!

Wow! That's a good shot of the plug! Thank you, I'm definitely going to look at it tomorrow. The update is... That door switch has three wires! This explains why there's one switch that works, and one that's "fickle" in the same assembly.

I took the switch apart, cleaned it, ohmed it out and reinstalled it with the good dielectric grease. It worked good for about 5 miles.

Then I got with the previous owner, and he said you just "bend the door in" at the bottom when it does this. :ohno:

Gonna dig even deeper tomorrow and HOPEFULLY put this bug to rest once and for all. (Bending the door inward and harder against the switch "cures" the dingle beast for about 3 miles and then it's back) Probably just a coincidence.

I've slain the beast. I'm not particularly proud of how I did it, but maybe future generations shall search the net and find this link and all of this information about this rather hair pulling problem.

I cut the brown wire.

After figuring out that the other two wires actuate the dome light, I deduced that the brown wire was the culprit and cut it. Finally I can drive in peace! I really appreciate all the help and support and maybe the next adventure will be more logical and less "gremlin" induced.
