Nissan will build a heavier-duty version of its Titan pickup in order to expand the lineup and compete head-to-head with Detroit automakers.

Nissan plans to redesign its big Titan pickup in mid-2009 and according to a report in Automotive News, a heavy-duty version will be part of the redesign. A diesel engine option will be part of the upgrade, but there's no word yet on who will supply the new engine. The truck will target domestic three-quarter-ton trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 2500, Dodge Ram 2500 and Ford F-250.

Toyota later this year will begin assembling its redesigned 2007 Tundra pickup, and executives have said the company is studying the feasibility of adding a heavy-duty model to compete with similar products from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and GMC.

What this means to you: It will only be a matter of time before Nissan and Toyota have full-size trucks to compete head-to-head with the domestics in every category.

Compete? Ha.

If Nissan does with their heavy duty trucks what they did with the Titan, Detroit might wanna consider buying a ton of stock in Nissan just so they can stay afloat.

The Titan didn't scare anyone, as it failed to meet sales expectations.

This HD version is finally a step in the right direction. Truck owners want OPTIONS.

I was only really going on owners' opinions as I worked on alot of trucks before and would always chat it up with Titan owners. Almost every time, they were former domestic truck owners (mostly half-tons) and they couldn't say enough about how much of a step up the titan was.

I agree completely that the Titan needs more options. I think you said in another thread a while ago was: "Nissan failed to understand that trucks are tools." One size does not fit all. =\

I agree. The Titan definitely seems like a better truck all around.

seva i dont think that the medium duty vehicles that come out of japan will be able to take the place of their american counterparts on these shores.

can you honestly tell me you can see a kia bongo/fuso/etc... hauling a horse trailer, or how about some light construction equipment? im not speaking about these trucks' roles in the commercial market, because they are available to private consumers who probably dont think about reliability and economy when purchasing their vehicles.

besides it aint got no hemi.

Sweet. Sooner than I expected! I love the Titan, but it's lack of variants and options is definitely killing it's sales. It's definitely the best 1/2 out there, followed VERY closely by the F150.

Toyota, though, will never build a truck to compete with Detroit. They've failed every single time they've tried for the last decade, and they've STILL yet to make a full size truck with any sort of respectable powerplant.Them saying they're planning to target 3/4 ton domestics is like Honda saying the Ridgeline is a 1/2 ton pickup. They can pretend all they want; it doesn't mean it's true.

YES! I've so been waiting for a Titan diesel! I talked to the head of the NISSAN booth at the KC Auto Show about a bunch of stuff, this included, and we talked about how cool a diesel Frontier with an 8,000lb tow load with brakes to handle that would be

That's exciting news!
