Nissan targeting MX-5 with Silvia (240SX) replacement

As brilliant as the GT-R is, its premium price tag and limited availability means it will be out of reach for most sports car lovers for some time to come. Then there’s the new 370Z but it too can be a bit expensive for younger fans. Sadly, Nissan’s affordable sports car, the Silvia (200/240SX), no longer exists but that may soon be set to change as a replacement for the car is rumored to be in the works. With rivals Honda and Toyota both planning their own respective compact sports cars in the form of the CR-Z hybrid and Toyota-Subaru joint sports coupe, Nissan is not prepared to stand idly by and will come out with its own version.

According to AutoExpress, the new car will be available as a roadster and will feature styling inspired by 2006’s Urge concept car. Power is expected to come from a 1.6L four-cylinder petrol engine turbocharged to the tune of 200hp (147kW). This should see the car accelerate from 0-60mph in around six seconds and comfortably reach a top speed of 140mph.

While Nissan is yet to officially confirm its development, nor offer any hints, inside sources claim the car’s release has been delayed due to the financial slump and should arrive on the market late in 2011 as a 2012 model.

btw i saw the new genesis coupe today at work..its a thing of beauty.. it has amazing body lines and the interior looks comfortable and nice.. and the brakes looked yummy big shiny red brembos.. hyundai outdid themselves on that one

that thing (I refuse to call it a car) looks awful. I've taken s***s that look better than that and who ever designed that thing should be shot. If i'm going to buy a new car it wouldn't be one with 1.6L engine.

well thats just a conceptthat was made a long a** time ago its called the nissan urge..its like a car with a built in xbox 360 and you can use the steering wheels and shifter, pedals with the racing game you play..thats not gonna be the new S16

and if they are making a new S16 with a 1.6L turbo thats super s***ty..but i bet the car is gonna look good... better than that..theyve always had good lookin cars.. like the new 370Z, 350Z, G37s, Altima Coupes...

I think a while back, Nissan made a statement that denied the revival of the S-chassis. However, they did the same thing back in the day when making a statement about the Z car. I wouldn't put too much stock in what they say publicly, because it is all about public opinion and dollar signs

There was a thread not too long ago that linked to a public announcement that Nissan would drop the S16. 1.6L Turbo?! That's very unlikely. But in case something like the reconsideration of the Z happens with the S-chassis, I'd love to see a newer car sporting some flip lights!

Yeah I remember reading the PA from Nissan about their stopping all work on the s-chassis revival car. Something about the economy not being right for the target audience of car buyer's not looking to pick it up, they're banking on the Altima and the new 370 to make their money now. But it would be nice if they did release it once this slump evens itself out.

Also, if I remember correctly the specs for the new 240 were actually not bad, I think the engine was supposed to be competitive with an SR20, definitely did not have a 1.6 dropped in it.

I'd love to see nissan bring out a miata competitor, but if its not in the low 20k price range I don't see it working b/c people would just buy a Z for 30k

Yeah that concept should never have been designed. Seems like most manufactures are responding to the terrible economy buy cutting their sports cars. I think there might be a surge of cars that have been in development for a while once the economy is back in shape.
