I got my timing kit today and it included a $20 tube of Nissan branded silicone. I've got plenty of other bottles of RTV selant already...Is there anything special about this Nissan stuff? I know off the top of my head I have Loctite brand 587 and 598.

There are hundreds of grades and formulations of sealants. Select the one that is chemically suitable for the job.

Every product usually has 5-10 pages of pdf info on manufacturers web sites.

The curing time can vary from 4 hours to 48 hours at exactly the same temperature.

That's the problem, I can't seem to find any information on the Nissan sealant to compare with what I've got. I can't imagine this would be in the FSM....any advice?

Since you already have the Nissan RTV I would just use it. I have never seen specs. on the Nissan stuff, but I know Permatex Grey says that it's a replacement for Nissan spec. RTV on the package. My local dealership actually uses the Permatex. I like the grey color vs. the orange-y red Nissan stuff - since it blends in with the engine. I know T3 was using a BG Black RTV when I was there in '03 and it has held up nicely. One thing we did was reseal the rocker covers at the end of the day and then let them set up overnight. I think it's all too common to start the engine up too soon after sealing something.

Exactly what I was looking for....thanks for chiming in. I'm going to do a little bit of research and see if I can find out the differences. I had to put off the project for another day because I realized that most of the timing chain torque settings were 10-20 ft-lb and my wrench only goes down to 30. Time to pick up another.

I'm not trying to be a cheap a$$, I'm just trying to not throw money away. If it's another $20 (sending back some of the other parts too) I can get back in my pocket it's all going back into the engine anyway.
