Sup People,

this is a repost the original thread is located in zerothread/198796

Were Contemplating Buying a Nissan Versa SL. but i noticed that nissan and infinty is offering this technology to their models. some come as standard equipment. I want to know a couple of things:

is the system is reliable?

is the keyfob the only way to unlock it and turn the ignition on or does it has a old regular key for back up?

are the fob resistant to the normal "Wear and tear" and some unexpeded falls?(not including water, water is the main enemy of electronics)

are the replacement fob extremely expensive?Programming?

Thanx for the future replies Guys,

-Illan

So far, the system has been pretty reliable. As you probably know, the key is completely wireless and it sends a signal to the car whenever it is in range. When you walk up to the car, all you have to do is press a black button located on the handle to unlock the doors (press it once to unlock the driver's door and twice to unlock all of them). Then, with the key still in your pocket, you can start the car. On the versa, there is an actual key located within the keyfob (on the back side of the keyfob there's a switch that you slide and you can pull the key out) so you can start the car with the key if your battery died, or you dropped your keyfob in the water or something like that. The keyfob is just as resilient as regular remote keyless entry keyfobs that have been out for years, so yes, they can sustain some falls, but obvioulsy water is not a good thing for them to see.I would imagine the replacement keyfobs to be pretty expensive, because like you said, they have to be programmed by the dealer and the dealer charges a minimum of one hour on anything (even if it takes 2 minutes) which is $98. That being said, it's probably not much more than you would spend to replace a key and a remote keyfob in older cars. For example, I lost a set of keys for my maxima, and the keyfob was $30, the key is like $40 and it has to be programmed by the dealer due to the immobilizer...I-key is a really good idea IMO, and I'm sure this'll replace all conventional style keys in the near future.

Just an FYI here, I found that the trunk lid would not operate today when I pressed the black button. I had the remote in my pocket so I was puzzled as to why the trunk lock would not function. By chance I looked over at the paasenger-front door to find that I had left the door ajar. Once I closed it properly, the trunk lid operated as it should. Tada!!

If you leave the engine on and close the doors, but the iKey system detects no keys INSIDE the car, the car will beep at you. Leaving a door or the rear hatch open keeps this beeping from occurring...

(It's rained pretty hard the last couple days, I've been backing up my car to the building at work and loading up)

Could someone maybe upload a pic of the iKey and key?

There are pics on the NISSAN site and in the brochure.

I love the Inteligent Key, but I have a recurring problem where the car beeps at me when I close the door after hitting the inside door-lock button. I open the door (which hadn't locked), hit the lock button again, and when I re-close the door it invariably works.

Strange.

Love the system, though. It's so handy not to have to keep pulling out the keys and then stuffing them back in my pocket. Wish my house had the same sort of thing. :-)

I think this is more of a feature than a problem.I suppose it's one more way of the car trying to prevent you from locking your keys inside. All you have to do is leave the doors unlocked, then close all doors, then press any of the black buttons. All the doors will lock and you'll hear a double beep.Does this address your question or did I miss the point entirely?

I have this problem (feature) with my older Maxima. You can't lock the door with the inside buttons while it's open. (I leave it running with the doors locked in the parking lot at work on cold mornings since we have live surveillance of the lot with monitors in my office). The way around this that I discovered is to open the BACK door, and lock the front door (which locks all 4 doors) by reaching from the back door.I don't know if this works with the Versa, though.

Ron...

You're supposed to lock the doors using the request button on the outside of the door.

Are you trying to lock the door while it's running to let it warm up, or is this for locking the door when you're leaving it? If so, just hit the button on the outside and everything will lock.

If you're trying to warm it up, I have to remind you that in our state, it is illegal to leave an unattended vehicle idling. Locked or not.

Which makes me laugh that remote starts are so popular here... legal to buy, and legal to use... only while the vehicle is attended. Making the systems basically pointless.

Looking back, I see I forgot to include one key bit of information. When I said, "recurring problem," I meant merely that the problem repeats. The datapoint I didn't mention is that it doesn't always do it! Most of the time...say 75% of the time... I use the inside door-lock button and the car doesn't object. But about a quarter of the time, it beeps and refuses to lock the door.

If it wouldn't let me use the inside button at all, I'd understand...but it does. I'm just mildly curious about what happens that minority of cases where it doesn't work.

The best thing I can come up with is that the pocket where I have the intelligent key is too close to the door...the inside-the-car sensor still can "see" the key, and thus assumes I'm still in the car. But I've tried stuff like turning away to block the line of sight with my body, or get further away from the car before the door closes. Still get instances where the beeper goes and the door doesn't lock.

Again, it's the inconsistency that bothers me...

I just had to laugh today. I went shopping with my wife. When we got out of the car at the store, the Versa refused to let us lock the door with the inside button... I tried several times, but it just kept beeping when I shut the door. I eventually locked the door with the button on my key fob. We went to another place, and the same thing happened.

I figured, "Great...the Versa read NICOClub and realized that it wasn't supposed to let me lock the door with the inside button."

When we got home, closed and locked the Versa (with the key fob again) and walked to the front door of the house, my wife suddenly discovered her keys were missing. We went back to the Versa, opened the door, and discovered that her set of keys had rolled out of her purse when she put the purse in the car at the start of today's shopping trip.

And THAT'S why the door-lock button didn't want to work, today... it was still sensing an intelligent key in the car. After taking her keys out, the inside-door-lock button was back to working fine, again.

I have a question about the Intelligent Key keyless ignition and entry system..

I ordered my Versa friday, I should get it on wednesday, they never mentionned anything about this keyless ignition and stuff.. Does it come standard or is it an option? Maybe we don't get this option in canada?

from what I gather from the Nissan Canada website, you guys get Keyless entry (the standard kind, not the iKey) in the SL... but it doesn't list the iKey as an option...

Down here, it's part of the bluetooth package on the SL.
