well strictly speaking in Le Mans racing, there are usually around 50 competitors with 4 different classes running at once. LMP1, LMP2, GT2 and GTE Am (formerly GT1). Cars in class LMP1 will only directly compete with LMP1 cars same goes with LMP2 and GT class cars, even though all cars start at the same time and run the track simultaniously. If reliability fails the LMP classes a GT class car can win the series by virtue of completing more laps than the LMP vehicles but that is rare.
so for example there are 10 LMP2 cars competing that year and 10 LMP1 cars, the Nissan LMP2 could finish 11th overall (if it doesnt manage to out lap and LMP1 cars) but if it beats all the other LMP2 cars it wins in its class.
