I just had my last free oil change at the dealer recently and I been preparing for my first DIY oil change. I will not turn this into the dreaded which oil is best topic, so your safe. lol! :rotfl

My question is about the OEM oil filter. The wix 3.25" part number 51356 which equates to >

Purolator PL14610
Super Tech ST7317
Fram PH7317
Napa Gold 1356 <<<<<< Contemplating this one or the Purolator PureONE.

So is the Nissan Rogue's OEM oil filter recessed or not? This is because I want to prevent torquing the filter tight where I might end up crushing the filter thread portion. :ohno: This way I know if the filter is truly 100% compatible or not. I believed it is recessed but obviously don't know since I never done an oil change. Has anybody noticed or it never really mattered to anyone. Never knew this stuff with my maxima. The internet is so informative folks.:chuckle:

Before I go, I thought I leave a oil geek statement. Anyways, I am planning to use Penzzoil Platinum Ultra because the TBN is a whopping 13%. I know I'm busting the periodic table on you guys...LOL ! The point is, that's freaking higher than Amsoil. Oops brought the taboo word out. Better go before I get flamed! :nutkick

Anyways, Here are pictures I borrowed online to show you what I am talking about:

This Wix would obviously not fit the OEM vehicle unless you want to forcefully fit the filter in by crushing the thread portion or so that is what they say! (Or perhaps it doesn't matter if it's recessed or not.) Any thoughts? I know, talk about anal. :bang

WIX makes the NAPA Gold gold filters. They are identical.

I've been using NAPA Gold for almost 60,000miles on my Rogue and never had a problem. They fit perfectly. IMHO the WIX/NAPA are one of the better filters out there. I use them exclusively.

Oh, in case you are curious here is the OEM filter #15208-65Fxx disassembled:

I stopped using them because I dislike the cardboard used for the filter media end caps.

Older Nissan filters (about 3-4 yrs ago) were much more solidly constructed much like the NAPA/WIX filters. Here is one of those older #15208-9E000 filters. Unfortunately you cannot buy them anymore:

I run a small shop and we sell AC filters for the most part. I had a free change at the dealer on my new Rogue, so for the second change, I took it in. The service manager told me to only use Nissan filters (I'd used an AC for the first change). He claimed only the Nissan filter had a check valve and any other filter would cause engine damage. While I've heard this over the years from almost all manufacturers, I just wanted other Nissan owner's opinion. I've used AC, CarQuest, NAPA, and maybe a Wix on our '95 Maxima, without any problems. If this Rogue turns out to be half the vehicle our Maxima is, I'll be pleased.

That's a bunch of crap. If we followed that reasoning, then every tom, d!ck, & harry who changed their own oil and filter every 3000 miles for instance, than under YOUR service manager's reasoning, we would all be causing engine damage. Hence, he is also saying since we are causing our own engine damage, then I am speculating that his dealership won't make any repairs for that type of engine damage under warranty. Heck, every forum member here using a non-nissan filter is damaging their engine and ruining their warranty I presume.

Don't let him blow smoke up your a**! :wtf2: :poke:

Instead of the service manager insulting the intelligence of their customers, he should have said something like the nissan OEM filters were just as good as a Mobil 1 oil filters or it helps clean your engine better than Fram or something. As a service manager, if he is claiming these as facts, I would question his integrity in running a department and if his intentions lies with the customers or maximizing the dealership's profit without the best interest of the customer. :bs:

I feel sorry for the women population who have to deal with the automotive industry or car repairs in general. :gotme

You know, Casper, I think I'll contact AC Delco and see what their take is on this. As I said, I've heard this over the years, especially from Toyota and Honda. It's my contention that all good filters have check valves if it is necessary for the application.

And a check valve would be needed on a Rogue, since the filter is horizontal.

John, save your receipts for the warranty... if the AC Delco part number is for your engine's application... it will not void it

they're better than fram's ... the cardboard endcaps really suck!

i've seen another thread about this and OEM = Fram in construction

Pretty much every Nissan filter; OEM and otherwise, has an anti-drainback valve. I don't remember the last time I've seen a oil filter for any make (Nissan, Mazda, Honda, etc) without one as they are pretty much the norm nowadays.

Yes, sadly even the newer OEM Nissan filters have cardboard end caps just like Fram's. I suppose it works for the application, but IMHO I think it's a step backwards.

Next time, ask him if you have to use HIS OEM filters or if any Nissan filters will be good enough. :slap:

Wonder why so many people dislike dealerships after these types of remarks. What a bunch of !$#*&^...
