Over the last two months, our Nissan Rogue started making whining/howling noises. At first it was very soft, but eventually it would get louder and louder. The amount of time the car has been on does not seem to affect the issue. Sometimes it goes off as the engine is turning on, sometimes it randomly goes off at stoplights, sometimes while cruising on the highway. This issue comes and goes so spontaneously, and we've had two car shops look at it (one random shop, and one dealer). The car has been at the dealer for a week and a half now, and neither of them are able to replicate the issue.

We were able to get a video recording of it once because the howl went on and on. We sent the video to the technicians, but they are still unable to replicate it. The technicians tell us they've had it running for an hour at a time, would take it out to drive a few miles. Nothing.

Your input is greatly appreciated!

If it lasts long enough when it happens then quickly get out of car and pop hood to see which end of motor it's coming from, that may tell the tale. Say belts and about to lose a pulley or belt and a walk home or tow charges. Or the other end of engine and transmission issues.

Heater fan? Sounds like it's inside the cabin?

Yeah I would second that it sounds like its inside. Does it quit if you shut the fan off? If so something slipped down a vent and is causing that noise. Dead bug, leaf piece of paper or the like.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I am getting the car back today from the dealer, and will report my findings. They've told me over the phone that there are no issues with the car, and they are baffled with it given that they are unable to replicate it.

It definitely sounds like its from the inside (I just told the techs from the dashboard). I will eat the $125 inspection fee, inspect the cabin and hope that will resolve the issue.

Thanks again for your input!
