Nissan Recalls More Than 1M Vehicles for Air Bags

Nissan is recalling just over 1 million cars, SUVs and vans because the front passenger air bags may not inflate in a crash. It's the company's second recall to fix the same problem.

The recall affects the Altima midsize car, Leaf electric car, Pathfinder SUV and Sentra compact models from the 2013 and 2014 model years, as well as the NV200 Taxi van and Infiniti JX35 SUV from 2013. Also covered are the Infiniti QX60 and Q50 SUVs from 2014.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan says the vehicles' computer software may not detect an adult in the passenger seat. If that happens, the air bags won't inflate.

Nissan will notify owners and dealers will update the software for free. The recall is expected to start in mid-April.

Most of the vehicles were recalled in February of last year for a similar problem. Dealers replaced seat sensors, but Nissan said it continued to get consumer complaints and warranty claims in vehicles that had been repaired.

Front passenger seats have sensors that determine the passenger's weight and turn off air bags off if a child is on board. The malfunctioning sensors can turn the air bags off even if an adult is in the seat.

Nissan received three reports of air bags failing to inflate in a crash. Spokesman Steve Yeager said in an e-mail that he is not sure if anyone was hurt in those incidents. There have been no deaths due to the problem, he said.

The recall affects almost 990,000 vehicles in the U.S., another 60,000 in Canada and small numbers in other countries, Yeager said.

My neighbor had a Nissan. They recalled it for a bad airbag. Nissan gave him a new wife.

Wouldn't THAT be awesome! You just get an email from your car saying, "Hey, there was a computer problem preventing the airbag from working, but it's fixed now. Have a nice day!"

I don't have a problem with Nissan stepping up to the plate fixing this problem. Far better than what GM did with their recent recall.

GM Recall: Was The Auto Safety Agency Asleep At The Wheel?
General Motors admits it screwed up by not fixing defective ignition switches in the Cobalt and five other car models as soon as it became aware of the problem. The company has now recalled 1.6 million cars worldwide to replace those faulty switches which can suddenly shut off the engine while the car is being driven and disable the airbags in a crash.

The problem has been blamed for 31 crashes and at least 12 deaths.

Major Events in GM's Recall of 1.6 Million Cars
Congress, the Justice Department and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are all investigating General Motors Co.'s recall last month of 1.6 million vehicles for an ignition switch defect which can cause the car to stall and deactivate the air bags. The defect is linked to 12 deaths.

Here is a timeline of key events, based on documents from GM, NHTSA and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce...

To give some perspective, according to NHTSA, in all of 2013, Toyota led all car manufacturers with 5.3 million vehicles recalled, followed by Chrysler with 4.7 million recalled, then Honda with 2.8 million. As of this morning, GM has recalled a total 4.8 million vehicles in just the first three months of 2014. That is some rather humbling numbers.

Mazda recalling cars due to danger from venomous spider.
Image

Mazda is recalling 42,000 Mazda6 cars in the U.S. because spiders can weave a web in a vent hose and cause the fuel tank to crack.

The recall involves cars from the 2010 through 2012 model years equipped with 2.5-liter engines. The yellow sac spider, which is attracted to hydrocarbons, builds webs that cause pressure to build in the fuel tank. That increases the risk of fuel leaks and fire.

Mazda recalled cars in 2011 for the same problem. It put covers on the vent line, but has found spiders can get past them. Mazda will update the cars' software for free beginning this month to ensure that the fuel tank pressure doesn't build up. Mazda says no injuries or fires have been reported due to the issue.

That's a weird one. Don't' most manufacturers vent the gas tank back into the intake tract for emissions? Why would you vent it to the atmosphere?

Good grief, another GM recall
General Motors says it is recalling 8,590 of its 2014 Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Malibu sedans because the factory might have put rear brakes on the front wheels. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/car ... e/8862059/
