WASHINGTON — Nissan is recalling 26,398 2009-'10 Altimas and Maximas because a strut rod could come out of its mounting position, affecting vehicle stability and increasing the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The upper front strut insulators may have been manufactured out of specification, resulting in a potential for the strut insulator to crack," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If the strut insulator is cracked, there is a potential for the strut rod to come out of its mounting position, which could affect vehicle stability and increase the risk of a crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Nissan noted that if the crack were to occur, "the strut rod would begin to make a loud noise audible to the vehicle operator."
It added: "Under normal driving conditions the suspension remains intact as the strut spring is contained within the body strut tower housing and the strut rod would remain within the inner diameter of the strut spring, so the vehicle operation is not degraded. However, under certain extreme driving conditions, there is some potential for the strut rod to come out of its mounting position, which could affect vehicle operation and increase the risk of a crash."
Nissan said it discovered the issue during testing at its Canton plant. There are no reports of injuries or crashes associated with this issue, it noted.
Nissan dealers will replace left and ride side front strut insulators for free. The recall is expected to begin on October 5. Owners may contact Nissan at (615) 725-1000.
