Hello - My Nissan van has low compression on #1 cylinder - and all the symptoms of a blown ring. I would like to repair it without pulling the engine. I am looking for advice before getting started. Thank you

never done it on a quest however it will require you pulling the piston/rod in question out of the engine, if you have access enough to remove the oil pan you may be able to get the rod of and massage it out. However putting the piston back in may be near impossible.

Thanks - the oil pan is fairly easy to remove on this car. It is a v6 - the piston in question is facing the firewall - but I believe there is enough rome to remove it.

Like I said removing it wouldn't be the hardest part, getting it back in the bore with the new rings will likely be the hardest part.

You'll need to remove the head and the pan, then install the piston with new rings.

Will there be enough rome to remove the back (cab-side) pistons with the engine still in the vehicle? Thanks

That I cannot answer, I've never gotten that deep into a Quest.

Your answer.

You might be able to, but chances are high that it won't work.

*ps* I actually asked my friend this. He's into Honda's (never worked on a quest.)

He told me that on B series engines, he usually would just take the heads off and oil pan and pop the piston out from the top if he didn;t have enough time to get the engine out.. Razi already mentioned this.

You're welcome to try. Please tell us if you fail.

I am going to try to pop the head and pan of and see if it works. I will let you know how it goes.

If you do take the heads off, that "will" work.

but as far as just taking it out through the oil pan, that would be a no, sir.

By the way, make sure there's enough room for you to reach your hand into the crank and push the piston up the cylinder, it would be literally impossible to just pull the piston out from the top, there's no handle :gapteeth:
