Well, you're right, it IS all in how you treat/maintain a car. Any car that has been abused for ten or more years (or less) will probably be a POS. Nissan quality IMO is very good. My 240 has 150k on it and runs like a champ. Not super fast, but it runs well. My brother has a '93 Altima with 210k. It runs well, but has had some maintenance as one would expect with that kind of mileage. My mom's minivan (Villager) has the Nissan 3.0 V6 and it's 210k+. Also runs well. The steering in my 240 and my brother's Alty are still very tight.

I think you would find that the 240 can be a very fun car, as well as practical. They're small but well designed. In shopping for one, take your time, be patient and maybe you too can luck out like Sygerwulf and find a super-nice 240 for cheap.

Welcome to NICO.

um...nissan definitly is not a bad car company by any means. but they are not necissarily the best, the way i always heard it, not totally sure of course, was for foriegn motors, toyota was the best, then honda, then nissan. only for reliability of course, but the bottom line is, if you take care of your car it will take care of you. i have a 1989 FORD (ha!) ranger with over 200K on it, no major problems, only maintance fix ups. you can always look for reviews, and different model cars from the same manufacturer can have a totally different reliability raiting.

Have you ever looked at the exhaust on a Camry?

thanks repo man : )

Yeah I looked for my 240 for over a year before I got this one. There's a whole lot of ones that are abused and ragged out, but every now and then you can find one that's in great shape.

No problem man. That's exactly how you do it. I passed on several cars before mine came along. I don't know if I made out quite as well as you, but I'm very happy with the purchase.

Wish I could have seen it yesterday! Oh well, I'll make it down sometime.

In general I believ as a car company Nissan Stregths and weaknesses are as follows:

Weaknesses:

-Auto Trannies (much like many other japanese companies they need above average maintenace and a transmission cooler to last, but if those things are done they last a LONG time even if abused)

-Recently paint (not as bad as ford though)

Strenghts:

-Engines!!, Nissan engines tend to be both strong and very durable not an easy combunation to achieve always. An industry leader in engine technology (Witness VQ30/35, VH45DE etc).

-rear diffs, tend to be strong

-balance of design.

-Interiors, witness the 240SX Interiors , almost a decade since the S14 came out abd still looks like a thoroughly modern interior. Q45 interiors are another good example, fist Gen Q interiors (90-93) have little to distuingish them form 2002 interiors in look and execution

i love my car. i hate the auto, i think somethin might be goin wrong w/ it or sumthin. it shifts fine, but makes strange noises. its actually in the engine bay where the noises are from. but its got sumthin to do w/ the gear its in. reverse is a certain noise, drive its fine. i don't know, i can't explain them all, but there are just strange noises. another reason i wanna SWAP TO 5SPEED. but the motor is perfect, interior is great, suspension great. i definately would buy another nissan (w/ a manual transmission tho)

Might have just been my car, but I disagree, I think the manual trannies are weak/weaker than the autos.

My first car was a 94 sentra xe. My dad bought it from my uncle. My uncle uses only Nissan Sentras in his driving school (its all his fault that I'm addicted to Nissan I guess). So, I got the car with 99k on it, thats 99k of 16 year old driving school drivers...I then proceeded to put 70k on the car in 2 and half years. I delivered pizzas with it, took it on every road trip in the North East. I beat on the car endlessly....seriously beat it, pinning the gas, yoinking the E-brake, got it to go 110, and drove it for well over 100 miles doing well over 90 the whole time. Got into three accidents with it (nothing major, 2 were me rear-ending people)

Nothing ever really broke on it. I had regular maintance, like brakes, and I had to replace the starter, alternator, and a couple of belts (which was to be expected at 125k). I never had to replace anything else on it. Oh yeah, and my point, I had an auto transmission and at 170k it ran like it did at 100k. If anyone is looking for a good, cheap commuter car, get a Sentra....I miss mine.

By the way, I'm a much better driver now, and I baby my 240. I have nothing but good things to say about Nissan reliability. Sorry for the length.

LOL, I think its also funny that everyone just chose to ignore Tino for that many posts. lol.

You can't blame these guys tho. When I didn't know jack about cars, I thought civics were okay, and all that commercial influence just sways them there. But when I got to working on them, its horrible, I think people who work for Honda are the pot heads of the Japanese, and the only reason they have these great designs coming out is b/c once in awhile the design engineers snort a little too much and they see pretty colors.

I've studied tons of basic engine designs from various motor companies, and Nissan really knows what they are doing. I'm glad Nissan decided to get it in gear, their new marketing strategy and designing has top of the line. Have you seen how much detail they are putting into the 350Z? Holy crap, do they mean business. I agree with Toyota used to being the best. My last car was a 1990 Auto Camry. 3.0L V6 150 hp. That thing was small, but ****ing fast!! I got into so many accidents in high school but it still ran like a scarred war hero. After about 250K+ miles, only major probs i had with it was the transmission locking up from gunning it too much, and a leak in the oil seals which wasn't fixed from a previous accident. With that huge history and damage, I sold it for $4000+. They didn't want the car tho, they wanted the parts, very popular car, especially the infamous "perrywinkle blue".

But enough about Toyota. My 1995 240SX =) When I bought it, it looked so clean and beautiful, Ran great!. And the engine bay? Perfect! It was clean, no leaks, and it had the factory oil filter! :) .............;) ........ .......... ...WTF! factory oil filter! HOLY ****!!! WTF? Original Air filter? Where is it? Under all that dirt?? OMG, what did i buy! Serious, this is how i bought it... but it still ran great, changed the oil like every 1000 miles. But this baby runs like I've never seen.
