ADVICE PLEASE.....Every time I crank my car I hear a knocking noisecoming from under the left side of the hood? 
The check engine light symbol has been flashing off and on , off and on etc,  
I had Auto Zone check it out with there dohikie mabib pilot thingamajig and it came back saying to replace my ignition coil and spark plugs.  Does anyone have any advice please.    S

So the noise comes while you are cranking or after it is running.

The code is saying that the #4 cylinder is misfiring. If is really making a bad knock -- serious. If just running rough ... most likely it is the coil. You don't ever want to drive a car with a flashing CEL -- that is telling you the cylinder is misfiring enough that raw gas is flowing to the exhaust. You don't want this as that gas enters the converter and ignites -- this will overheat and destroy the converter.

One thing you can try is swapping the #4 coil with one of the others, clear the codes, and fire up the engine. If the cylinder code moves, then you can be certain it's bad. If you end up getting a new one, I highly recommend going Bosch. They were the OEM and the price isn't steep.

I gotta ask. What happens if it gets to the point that it destroys the converter?

You have to replace the catalytic converters and maybe the downstream O2 sensors.
