Recently I am getting a grinding noise when I am shifting from 1st to 2nd' 2nd to 3rd and 3 to 4th gear on my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 with a 5 speed manual trans. I started all of the sudden one day and even made the noise when shifting into reverse. There is however no noise when downshifting. I took it to a trans shop and they installed a new clutch and that improved the situation but did not eliminate it. These guys did not seem to know what they were doing and had trouble getting the trans back in. They now tell me I need synchroniozers but I don't buy it. This problem started too suddenly, it happen in all gears including reverse and the trans runs great otherwise. I noticed that other owners have had the same exact problem. Any ideas

Well, synchronizers do control shifting between gears, so I don't see why you think they don't know what they're doing... (considering you probably have less of an idea) MOst shops won't crack open the gear box until the y absolutely have to. I'm betting that they just didn't do a complete test drive like they were supposed to.
Sometimes putting a trans back is hard work, and it doesn't always just slip in like it's supposed to, also. I had a btich of a time getting the trans back on my S13 way back when I owned one of those fanboy magnets. I had to try a bunch of different strategies like putting it in gear, turning the ring gear with a screw driver and cocking it to one side before it went in right.

Thanks Dattebayo for your response. You are right there are people that know more than I do and that is why I am asking for help. As you surely know there are more than one synrcronizer in a gear box and as you probally also know the reverse gear does not have one. So as I am sure you will agree that it is highly unlikly that all the syncro's went all of the sudden at one time and that the reverse gear which has no syncro also has the same problem. So that is why I can't buy their answer. I have also read a number of stories of people with the same exact problem as I have on numerous websites. So i was just hoping to get an answer from one of them on what trere fix actually was
