Well, synchronizers do control shifting between gears, so I don't see why you think they don't know what they're doing... (considering you probably have less of an idea) MOst shops won't crack open the gear box until the y absolutely have to. I'm betting that they just didn't do a complete test drive like they were supposed to.
Sometimes putting a trans back is hard work, and it doesn't always just slip in like it's supposed to, also. I had a btich of a time getting the trans back on my S13 way back when I owned one of those fanboy magnets. I had to try a bunch of different strategies like putting it in gear, turning the ring gear with a screw driver and cocking it to one side before it went in right.
