i got a 2002 pathfinder LE and right now when it starts but within 10 seconds it stalls. it can rev up but will immediately stall within the same time frame. every time i do this, i smell gas which makes me believe that its a leak. also i don't know if my fuel pump is really quite or not but i can hear it turn on so i was wondering if it is just really silent or if its a problem. i did go mudding a couple days ago and got stuck in water for about an hour. there is no water in my oil or engine.

Thanks

Tighten your fuel filter clamps a little bit, fuel may be leaking from there. The fuel filter is in front and above the rear differential. Better yet, if you haven't changed it within the past two years, change it out.

Change your differential and transfer case fluids ASAP, they're contaminated with water.

thanks man. do you think any of my fuel lines could be ruptured? i do have a full metal skid plate thats protecting my gas can. would it be under that? ive never done a fuel filter before so.

See this thread which shows the position of the fuel filter and tells you how to change it yourself. I highly recommend changing it especially if it has never been done before.

Where do you live? Rust may be a factor here if tightening the filter clamps doesn't help. Did you get the fuel filler neck recall done?

Ah, you shouldn't have any rust issues. Nonetheless, the dealer would probably replace your fuel filler neck if the recall hasn't been done. You should also have the vehicle inspected for the strut housing corrosion recall if it hasn't been yet, maybe give your dealer a call in the morning with your VIN to see if there are any outstanding recalls.

Recalls are always free of charge. If your seatbelts are slow at retracting (any of them), you can get those replaced for free as well. See this post.

Check the fuel pressure. You can rent one at O'reilly's, or you can buy one at Harbor Freight for under $20.

well i just cleaned the MAF sensor and that somewhat worked. i was able to turn the car over, however the rpms wont go pass 2 1/4. do you think that its still the MAF sensor or maybe the throttle sensor?
