Hi,

My tan leather wheel is falling apart and I would like an OEM replacement. The latest quote at the dealer for new was $700.

I have seen a few Maxima steering wheels on eBay that looked similar and wanted to know if they and other Nissan model cars have the same disign for an easy swap.

Thanks!

'96 Maxima steering wheel should work. The '97+ steering wheels had different connectors and such, but it can probably still be done with some manual footwork to rewire the cruise control and possibly swap the airbag.

unless your are really good with automotive wiring i would not recommend messing with the wiring going through the spiral cable and to the steering wheel, unless you dont mind setting off explosives in your face. It is very risky to mess with the circuits going into the steering wheel since the air bag, horn ,cruise ,and radio wires all go through that common connector. you screw up with one wire and BANG!!! air bag deploys and you are left with either blindness, torn open face, broken arm or worse death.

Stick with the same year if you buy the wheel so you dont have to screw with the wiring and end up hurting yourself.

That's good advice and I appreciate the warning.

Finding a good condition I30 or Maxima wheel that's tan from 1996 seems to be a challenging task. It's too bad the Wheelskins don't wrap around the spokes...

I'm pretty good with electrical work, so I'm not too worried about blowing the bag. However, I am not going to start a project like that until all my options are exhausted and I am able to locate a wiring diagram.

Thanks.

Do youself a favor. If you do decide to work with the wiring,do not work infront of the bag, work from underneath the colum and also have battery disconnected for 10mins or so [from both posts] before starting work on it. once you have completed it ,the first time you cycle the key to on reach under the steering wheel keeping your body clear of the bag and turn the key on. If it does go off the worst thing that will happen is you will be def for a few days.

Thank you for the precautions. If I do this, I will take your advice.

May be easier to go my a shop that does interiors and have them re-wrap in in leather.

That is a very interesting idea. If I can't find a good condition used one, I'll see if I can find a reasonably priced shop and get some quotes in the Tampa area.

Thanks.
