Nissan Maxima Electrical Problem

I have a 1986 Nissan maxima that has developed a problem with the digital display the one that shows fuel level, amp, temp and speed the other functions , turn signal, lights etc. all work fine.The dispaly will work fine when i first turn the engine on in the morning and will stay that way untill i make the first stop and shut off the engine.If I turn it on after a short time of the engine being off the dispaly will not come on.If I wait a couple of hours it will in most cases come back on and sometimes.At times it will come on when I'm driving and at other times it will go out when I'm driving.Anyone have a clue as to what is causing this problem.P.S.Today when I started the engine the dispaly came on but for the first 5-10 mins. it was eratic with the dispaly going wild.

Just wondering, Is there a "Instrument Voltage Regulator for the Digital Display ?" and if so could this be the problem.ThanksBobL
