Maybe.

Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) is set to take a key stake in Mitsubishi Motors Corp (7211.T), two sources familiar with the matter said, in a $1.8 billion deal that bails out its scandal-hit rival and boosts Nissan's clout in the small car market.
How this all went down, Mitsubishi lied about the fuel economy of some of its cars, a few that Nissan also sells under their name, some Nissan engineers tested the figures and found them wrong and all hell broke loose. Turns out Mitsubishi has been doing it for a while and admitted it. Whoops.

They both make electric cars.

I'm not sure what else these two have in common. I suspect Nissan saw a bargain and a chance to slightly boost its scale advantages.

Nissan saw a bargain? They created the bargain. They are the ones who blew the whistle on Mitsu. Methinks some clever (and underhanded) forces were at work. And they bought those shares at 50 cents on the dollar to boot. Newly issued shares, I might add. If I were a shareholder, I'd vote against it, or file a class action suit against Mitsu management for okaying such a deal.

'Course, without the deal, Mitsu probably goes under, at least in the car biz.
