Mornin' all, I have a 2003 Frontier that I have done much work on but I keep getting codes thrown. It seems as though I have purchased a lemon and a lemon that has limited access to information. Can anyone recommend a code reader that will actually read Nissan codes. As I understand it, I need a "consult" type of reader. Is Nissan proprietary for reading certain codes on their older vehicles? I have tried a couple of different readers and have been a little disappointed in the results. Thanks

Well, the OBD-2 scanners are fine for pulling code numbers and ready system check monitors. The consult 3 tools cost quite a bit more and can be used for deeper diagnoses per instruction from the FSM. I use the FSM, a voltmeter, and my OBD-2 scanner and have not yet needed a consult tool. Most FSM procedures are outlined with instruction for using a consult tool first and then again for using just your basic voltmeter so I just use the second set of instructions. I'd check reviews of the products available. You'd be looking for a Nissan Consult 3 tool. You could search the threads here as well in case one of our users has made a review.

Did you find your FSM here?

Thanks alot centralcoaster33,

That is kind of the same info I got from talking to some tech support people. IDK what I have gotten myself into, this truck has had so many issues. pretty weird to say the least. Now it seems that my transmission (4 speed automatic) may be slipping as it goes into second gear. I have pretty much exhausted my shade tree mechanic skills and will be taking to a guy that works on Nissans, hopefully he can figure out what is going on. I want to keep the truck for many years was my initial plan /:

If it's just the SES codes, any OBDII reader should do, or AutoZone will read the codes for free. OBDII codes are universal, but some are trickier than others to diagnose why the truck is throwing them.

Common codes on a VG33 are the Knock sensor and 02 sensor codes. The knock sensor is a bugger to replace because it's buried deep below the intake, and the whole top of the motor pretty much needs to come off.
