I ordered a few oil filters from Joe last week and he mentioned that Nissan has "superceded" the 15208-60U00 filter with the 15208-55Y00. I didn't think much about it until I got the filters in and noticed that they look like the old ones I used back on my 91 Maxima. Checked the box and some old invoices, and the 15208-55Y00 is the same filter Nissan has been using since the mid 80s for the Maxima, and about everything else except the J and Q!

My understanding of the situation is that when the Q was designed the engineers felt that a better filter was needed due to the clearances in the engine - so they made a new filter - the 15208-60U00.

Now, according to Joe, Nissan is saying that the 15208-60U00 and 15208-55Y00 filters are the same! The way I see it one of these scenarios are at play here...

1 - They've always been the same except that one is blue and the other is grey. The story about the smaller micron filtering in the 60U00 is B.S. and they just had a special filter for the Q/J to charge more for the part.

2 - There was a difference and they just increased the quality of the 15208-55Y00 to 60U00 standards and are now selling that to everyone. I doubt this, since I'd think they would convert everyone over to the 60U00 number since there's at least a perceived quality difference.

3 - (my guess is this one is it!) - They don't give a crap about the old Q and J owners anymore and it's cheaper to only build one filter. "So what that they don't filter as well - those engines are lasting too long anyway?" "How the hell are we going to sell Heath Roberts a new car if his runs forever and he likes it as well as the new ones?"

If they were smart they'd replace both filters with a new one of a completely different part number, paint it green, and call it "new and improved."

What's the consensus on the Mobil 1 filter? I'll have stockpile of twelve 60U00s by the end of the week, but after that I may have to go aftermarket!

HeathRead the post first...Which of my scenarios do you thinkn is at play?

Superior aftermarket filters are readily available. Could be ahy Nissan is consolidating their line. I used an OEM filter once and it looked more cheaply made than the Mobile One or Bosch filters I normally use.

I use the K&N performance gold filter. I have a feeling Nissan wasn't selling many factory filters anyway.

I change oil every 2-3 months so I doubt my car would notice the difference.

I called my dealer Sam Swope Infiniti. They said they are still selling the original filter and have no plans on changing and havent heard about a change either.

Off the cuff, he thought those were only the 97 and up filters (the new ones).

But they have 'em in stock and will for the forseeable future.

Well, the "new ones" at Scottsdale are really old ones that they've used on Nissans and other models for years. I think the 97+ filter is even smaller than the ones on our Q's. Maybe Joe got some b.s. from someone at a distrubition center that substituted the blues for the grey filters - but I suspect Scottsdale's volume may have caught up to them faster than the other dealerships...

I have always used Frams. Last 2 times Consumer Reports did a test on oil filters Fram was the best. Interestingly factory oil filters such as Mopar, Toyota, etc. were at the bottom.

That's surprising! Never heard anything good about the basic orange Frams till now.

I never heard anything good either.

Cut open a fram and look at the interior construction. Then cut open a Bosch, STP, Champion, Nissan OEM and look at same.

You will see a huge difference.

Okay, guys and girls, I am sure most of you remember the great Oil and Filter thread posted by Q45tech awhile back, with links to other groups about oil and filter data.

This will cure the Fram-o-philes big time, but not answer the question about what the new Q45 filter is exactly.

As another point, I was speaking with my wife's shop owner about an overhaul he did on an Aurora (a 4 liter Northstar V8) recently because the quick lube place had only filled it with 5 quarts instead of the required 8. It fried the lower end with oil starvation.

The point is, and I think Q45tech mentions this in this thread, oil capacity, the operating duty cycle of the engine, and filtration all play an important part in engine oil life.

One more thought. My 1972 all alloy, twin-cam 2 liter Alfa Romeo takes 7.1 quarts, and its filter is about twice the size of the Q45.

Talked to a parts guy at a dealership in MN today... said he just got the memo about the filter change today. Guess it's confirmed.

I just tried to order the grey filters and they all went to the blues. I have heard in the past that the blue filter is "not as rich" as the grey filter. I have contacted the factory to get some documentation on the differences. I bought still have 20 of the greys, but after that its all blues!-Joe
