TOKYO (July 23) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the development of a new "Forest AC" air conditioning system...
Nissan's new Forest A/C System reminds me of a high tech pine tree air freshener!
Personally I'd rather have a system capable of regenerating the "New Car Smell"... so even after 100,000 miles it would still smell as good as the day you drove it off the lot. Now thats an option I'd pay for!. Love that new car smell.
Unfortunately... that new car smell will eventually become a thing of the past.
So what exactly are you smelling in a new car? It’s a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), primarily alkanes and substituted benzenes along with a few aldehydes and ketones. Other prevalent components include toluene, acetone, xylenes, styrene, trimethylbenzene, various alkanes, ethylbenzene, and ethylene glycol butyl . These compounds are commonly found in the adhesives and sealers used to bind the textiles, hard plastics and most fabrics of every car. Outgassing of residual solvents and other chemicals from the materials creates a diluted volume of VOCs floating around interior of the vehicles passenger compartment. Chemists have attributed the pleasant scent of new cars mostly to phthalate plasticizers used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or other plastics.
Anyway, manufacturers continue to bend under government control as to eliminate car parts that give off high levels of VOCs. The intent is to help consumers choose environmentally friendly environments, including cars and homes that have potentially healthier indoor air. Ironically as automakers continue to eliminate interior components that off gas VOCs in an effort to protect us... we will loose the new car smell. In addition to health concerns raised over exposure to VOC's another downside to these gases is they eventually build up a foggy looking film on the interior window surfaces of your car. I’ll gladly keep cleaning my windows if it means I can keep my new car smell.
I’ve tired many of the aftermarket fragrances and air sanitizers and have yet to find one that really nails the new car smell. The closest might be the ones that smell like leather.. but eventually the inside of my car ends up smelling like a shoe repair shop rather than a new car. While not bad… its not what I’m looking for.
