Sorry if I'm being a newb and it's already out there, but I have searched and I am missing it.

I have decided it is time to hook up to the consult. I went looking for the softener and cables and found on ebay some cables for around 30 bucks but I am fully aware that you get what you pay for. I am wondering if someone might be able to point me in the direction of some quality cables as well as the best place to download the consult free software. I will start there and if I need more, I will then purchase the full consult. Also, I saw that there are multiple versions of consult (I.e. Consult II, consult 3) which do I need for my 90 n/a body with a 94 n/a engine in it?

Thank you.

Only the 96 was OBDII. I have a $30 ebay Consult to USB adapter, works fine. It's a pretty simple protocol. I use ECUTalk because that's all I could get to work on Win7 64-bit. It's great for pulling codes and getting sensor readings.

I too bought an Ebay cable. It came with several programs including ECUtalk. They all worked fine on my Windows Vista machine.
