Nissan has confirmed its popular IDx concept will go into production, with the rear-drive coupe slated for a likely 2016 release.

Nissan announced the development at the Detroit motor show on Tuesday, confirming that one of the two IDx models – either the lifestyle-based Freeflow model or the high-performance Nismo version – would make it to production.

The IDx concepts were first unveiled to the public at last year’s Tokyo motor show in Japan, bearing similar character traits to the company’s longstanding but now-retired 200SX and drawing on the iconic Datsun 510 coupe from the 1970s.

Touted as Nissan’s answer to the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ the IDx concept is a rear-wheel-drive coupe measuring 4.1 metres long and 1.3 metres high (only 100mm shorter than the 86).

Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer told media there was no confirmation of which of the two concept models would hit production.

“Don’t say that we won’t do both, but we will definitely do one of them,” he said.

He went on to hint that the IDx might have a manual transmission, or at the very least, paddle shifters.

At the time of the Tokyo unveiling, Nissan said the IDx Freeflow would be powered by a small capacity turbo four cylinder of between 1.2-1.5-litres; while the IDx Nismo would have a 1.6-litre, likely the same 140kW engine as that in the Pulsar SSS and Juke ST-S.

Palmer said the styling of the production model would closely follow that of the concept cars.

Thoughts? What do you think pricing will be? I think Kia's Turbo 6-speed RWD was a rude awakening for them haha.

ExtremeDimensions. I think you're wrong. Nissan hasn't learned anything. Not a single thing. For if they had truly learned anything they would have held on tight to the ToyoBaru twins' proof of the cliche': "If you build it, they will come." What Nissan is effectively saying is that they do not trust the brand's enthusiasts to purchase the type of car they have been demanding for years. This distrust leads them to believe that it's pointless to make a car geared towards the enthusiast community, and so they are choosing to go with a "sporty" people-hauler. However, that "sporty" people-hauler is going to flop at being "sporty", and the tight cabin space is going to make it flop at being an efficient people-hauler. A doubly flopping car that will only be redeemable by the enthusiast community once they start modding it, is what Nissan will put out.

But you know what, that may not actually be a bad idea. MSRP the car for around 15K and give the enthusiast warranty wiggle room to mod the car. That 10-15K saved over buying the FRS/BRZ would make for some sweet warranty-covered modifications. That'll never happen, though, so as it stands right now, the car isn't very appealing.

Like it was said in the other thread. This car is Nissan's self-fulfilling prophecy. They'll build a car we won't buy, just so they can use that as "proof it isn't profitable to build cars geared toward the enthusiast community, because the majority are young kids who can't afford new cars." But will continue marketing the IDx to "the digital nati

EDIT:Also, as a person who fears the almighty car note, I plan to be throwing money at a brand new cheap rwd sports/sporty car within the next three years. I grew up in Nissans, and as such would prefer it be a Nissan. However, if Nissan won't build it right, then I'm sure ToyoBaru won't mind taking my money instead.

NISSAN WHY ARE YOU SHOOTING YOURSELF IN THE FOOT, YOU USED TO BE AWESOME!!!

I remember reading in an article quite a while ago (cant find the source tho), that some ceo or high ranking dude at nissan said that while the silvia was such an iconic vehicle, it was considered a sales disaster, and that they were trying to avoid it, now whether avoid the silvia or the sales flop, he didnt made that clear, but by the looks, history and name o fthis prototype, seems to me that they are actually trying to avoid silvia alltogether!

way to drop nissans racing heritage and pedigree out the window ghosn, but then again, you're also CEO of one of the most boring and insignificant brands of the world, renault, nissan isnt your sales bag, homie!
