The last few weeks my Nissan has developed a problem I've never had before.

When I depress the clutch it comes up very slowly, sometimes taking 5 secs. This effect seems to be worse in cold weather. Yesterday the car started making a clicking sound when the car is in gear. This fequency of this sound corresponds directly to how fast the car is moving. I do not know if this is related or not.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause such problems?

Is there any other symptoms you notice like the clutch slipping? Is there any noise when you have your foot on the clutch? Is the pedal feel any different when you press on the clutch from how it used to be before this problem? Is the noise from the transmission the same regardless of what gear you are in?

Does the car shake at all? Like a really fast vibration when you rev the engine?

You might have thrown a damper spring, and a part is resting against the bell housing, causing the noise. This would also explain why the pedal is coming up slow, as a part of the spring may be getting pinched between the disc and pressure plate, squeezing out slowly.

If this is the case, then it's a very short time before something catasrophic happens. It could lead to a transmission replacement if not repaired soon. I'd have it professionally checked out, and they're going to want to pull the transmission to investigate the clutch.

That's the weird part. There's no other symptoms. The clutch isn't slipping at all. The clutch behaves normally when its pressed down. Its only when it comes up that there's a problem. There's no car shaking. Nothing.

I should probably clarify a little more. The problem is definitely worse when its cold, and a lot of times by the afternoon its behaving completely normally (except for the clicking sound, which now seems to be omnipresent).

I also forgot to add, that the clicking sound is not present in fifth gear, or if it is I can't here it.

Thanks for the help guys. I got a feeling I'm going to have to take it in to get a definitive diagnosis.

With my limited knowledge, I can think of two things that could cause the clutch to act like that. Something fubar'd with the pressure plate, or the master cylinder. I managed to trace all the problems that I was having with my clutch to the master and slave. The ticking noise might be bearing on your input shaft. Does it tick when the car is in neutral also?

Well, now that you've clarified a bit, it might be possible that the throw out bearing is the culprit. It could be the bearing itself or the perhaps a failure of the nose cone (cracked or whatnot), but that wouldn't seem to be temp dependant.

If the throwout bearing is sticking on the nose cone of the transmission, it could cause a slow pedal return. I could see that.

Looks like you'll have to tear it out to verify though.
