Hi Guys,

Which sensors are used by the speedo? It suddenly stopped working for me.

If it's the same as the USDM EX/FX's and some other Nissan/Infiniti models, there's no VSS. The speed signal comes strictly from the ABS. The ABS will stop transmitting it if a wheel sensor goes south, so the speedo will quit working in addition to the usual ABS/slip lights.

PS - On some models, wheel speed sensors aren't the only failure which can cause it. For instance, on late model D40 Frontiers a Steering Angle Sensor which goes MIA will also cause the speedo to quit. So unless you have an obviously-busted wheel sensor, you really need to scan the ABS for codes to see what's going on.

Hi,

Well the couse of events was that 1 ABS sensor went south and the speedo stayed working, the VDS and cruise control did stop. It stayed that way for quite a while, then recently the front ABS sensor seemed to fail and the speedo stopped.
I just wanted to find out which sensor(s) are used to give the speedo a count value to work on.
So possibly a steering angle sensor?
We do know that 1 ABS sensor is toast, but the others seem to have a signal. will confirm with the garage what is happening.
The amaya.com version of nissan fast shows that all parts are common, except for things like language pack and FM bands, they do 76MHz to 90MHz, means if I keep the original radio I only get two decent stations here in the uk!

It may only use two of the four wheel sensors, but to my knowledge Nissan doesn't specify that. They just say the signal comes from the ABS and that a wheel sensor code can cause it to stop. It's also possible your car has a VSS and that has failed in addition to the wheel sensor. If so there will probably be a P0500 in the engine and/or cluster, and possibly codes in the transmission as well. Most Nissan/Infiniti models have a VSS in the transmission, the ones which rely solely on the ABS for speed are in the minority.

My abs/traction light recently came on also. Over 300,000 miles and it’s never been an issue. I’m also hearing a faint stumble somewhere around or underneath. I’m just hoping my transmission isn’t dying but, shifting and fluids all good. I have another vehicle GM make where the lights been on for months, but just recently the light has stayed off for the past week. Diagnostics has claimed it to be a bad ABS pump but I don’t think that’s what it is. I’m now practicing turning the steering wheel every so often when washing, to clean any sensors because it seemed to have helped.

I scan for codes but only the basic engine codes show. I don’t have the scanner for ABS and airbag, might have to buy one considering the cost for diagnostic over $100 at even independent shops.

Hi,

I am trying to get garages to read the codes, they do not seem to be able to read the ABS stuff from the canbus, are there any programs known to be able to read this part of the messages returned?

On USDM Nissans before '08, ABS, airbag, and sometimes other stuff were on the DDL2 K-line (pin 7 on the OBD port) and not the CANbus proper. That was the "Consult II" setup before they went all-CAN. You might just need to get a more capable scanner that can talk to the old school buses.

I have seen an adapter that lets you talk to the bus with a full hex capable terminal program, so it needs a breakout adaptor to read the other lines.
Have you got or seen any info about all the pins?
My nissan left the production line in november 2006, put on the road early 2007 in Japan, so presumably uses the other signals on the connector.
Is it 16 or 17 pin that I need? I have seen adaptors between those available, so some people need that?

I can't recall if LDD1 was on 13 or 14, but that was for the transmission. For sure LDD2 was on pin 7, and that will have the ABS and airbag.

Okay, if your Cima's DLC is the same as a Q45 (and I have no reason to think it's very different), then the ABS is on DDL1 which is on pins 12~13, not on pin 7 DDL2 with the airbag. The normal CAN pins 6 and 14 only have RAS, LDW, and the seatbelt C/U. See GI-38 here for the layout:
