Greetings from Jamaica. Recently bought a 2001 Nissan Cefiro (2000 cc, V6). Nice car. Engine lacked power which showed up on my (steep) hill. I discovered engine had wrong spark plugs and 3 coil connectors were iffy. Changed 3 coils and engine "trouble light" came on. Computer says error code p1320. I'm surprised since the auto parts guy supplied the coils based on the chassis number. I then called the Nissan dealer who confirmed from the part number was correct for the coils, even though the price he quoted was much higher than what I had paid for them.

What do I do now? The problem seems to be with one or more of the 3 new coils. Could it be that one is a dud, or perhaps they are after-market parts and that has triggered the p1320? 6 new ones from the dealer would set me back J$100,000 (over US$1,000). Would it make sense to simply replace the 3 recent purchases with 3 genuine ones from the dealer?

Welcome to NICO! I'm not sure that it's the new coils causing the issues. I'm not all that familiar with the VQ20 but I imagine that it's the same setup wise as the VQ30. How many miles (km) are on the car? It may be time to change the other three.

To check coils;

1) Get a extra spark plug, new is better
2) Ground a coat hanger wire to the car chassis
You are going to see if you get a spark arc

3) pull coil away from engine spark plug and put in extra spark plug

4) start up car being carefull not to let spark plug touch metal yet

5) move coil pack with plug toward coathander wire. IF there is a strong
spark arc your coil is ok. Watch for the color of the arc. Blue and yellow
indicate strong current. If it takes contact with coathander wire to make
the spark I would guess the coil is weak.

5) You can also use a multimeter to check the coils. It will probably show
you in Chiltons. Sorry I dont see the Floor Shop Manual for this car.
If anybody else does, please chime in to help the man here.

this is what i did to check my coils.

Please use all safety procedures including gloves, eye protection etc
