HELP, GETTING DESPERATE , have 03 almera tino,45 thou on clock, december started revving when started , had camshaft sensor replaced , still did same two days later , but drives fine, no loss of power , no stalling , only revs when started , so drove for next month , no probs , but starting not good, took back to garage after much huffing and puffing they finally said theyd check timing chain , cost to look, hr at £40 decided time chain has stretched and would cost a grand to replace ,but car strangely still drives well, so took for 2nd opinion, autotec guy came out , he said chain ok, really tight , only took him 20 mins to take cover off and look, he says its VVF timing fault and needs iol/filter chainge ,we book it in to anothet garage , this garage then phones and say VVF fault wont fix problem its prob chain , who do we believe , gone from piller to post cant PX as on HP, they dont want to know , waranty not interseted either Im desperate , do I get VVF valve done £140 which may be under warranty or change chain, a grand which isnt under warranty

At Approx 90K miles [45K Kilos] I doubt the chain is stretched. I believe your car has the 1.8L engine in it. I assume what you are talking about is a rattle from the motor on start up. My guess would be the tensioner is going out or you may have a broken chain guide and the chain is slapping the metal portion of the guide during start up till the system develops enough pressure to pull the chain tight.

thanks for reply, it is 1.8there is no rattle on start up, no noise at all, but of course now VERY difficult to start , but when it does drives fine 1st garage says chain stretched quite badly , so Im assuming its a chain replacement now , it is only 45 thou on clock, can you just advise if we should believ garage ? as 2nd diagnosis said VVT timing fault and chain ok, howver I do not think he looked right into tensioners etc , as he says only took him 15 mins to check it , when 1st garage quoted hour to look right into this also have been told by nissan garage that VVF timing fault if rectified it would still be chain that is causing problem, is this correct please do not want to pay out a gradn if its not the solution!

Without looking at the car first hand I cant answer that question, but the only shop that actually looked at the chain said it was tight. I personally would lean toward the person who actually put his hands on it.
